my.foxmarks.com's frames: To be or not to be

In our recent re-launch of my.foxmarks.com, we changed the fundamental mechanism for interacting with bookmarks to a sidebar. While there was some internal dissent about whether this was a better user experience than the previous implementation (which displayed bookmarks in a standard full-width browser page), our overall assessment was that the sidebar was more consistent with what people expected.

Now we want to put the question to you, our users, explicitly: what do you think about the sidebar? If you used the previous version, did you like that better? Why?

We'll collect comments and feedback here and use them to help inform what we do with my.foxmarks.com in the future. Thanks!

  1. What I see is an ersatz sidebar, not a sidebar that is still there when I move to another tab. It's better than the wide white page alternative, but the blank area is still a bit puzzling at first glance. :-)

  2. if I can change my foxmarks' marks on line. that must be better.
Hope this new function comes out quickly

  3. I really prefer the old lay out of my.foxmarks.com

I really have no need for the frame on the right as I open the links in a new tab anyway.

I would prefer a nicely styled single page layout over the frames layout.

Greatly appreciate the work you are doing.

  4. i like the sidebar - i would prefer if it were a true sidebar that remained static while i changed tabs. also, i would like the capability to manipulate the links and modify them online.

  5. I preferred the old layout, however a logo that's still consistent with the new design (i.e. not the old foxmarks logo). So, basically, no to frames. It will be very confusing for a baby user.

  6. I prefer the new layout and also think that it is more consistent with usual firefox user expectations. I guess it would not be possible to make it a 'true' sidebar, as some comments have suggested, as you don't know what browser is being used to access the page.

So, for me, a definite improvement over what is already a fantastic product and service.

  7. I prefer the new sidebar but I wish it were a *real* sidebar that followed along in my other tabs. Otherwise it's very close to what I want.

    Thanks!

  8. There is a small bug when you press "open all" and you have a lot of links. The privacy policy and terms links do not move:

  9. I like the sidebar, but I just started using Foxmarks,so I never had any other way, but I am sure it is better this way than the other, specially since it is moveable.

I have been waiting for some kind of thing like this for a long time now,I have been using the yahoo toolbar to keep my bookmarks, but it increases the startup time for Firefox a lot(specially with linux),now I finally am happy with the way my bookmarks are there for me no matter where I am.

    Thank you all very much!

  10. I prefer the sidebar format, but I have the same problem as Robin (comment 8) - the links to the privacy/terms appear in the middle of the list.

Also there doesn't seem to be a way to log out.

  11. I like sorta like the frameset, but it doesn't work properly all the time for me. At times the links remove the side frame. Also, could there be a way to edit the links from that area or at the account pref. screen? Great job!

  12. I like the new Sidebar - much more logical - thanks!

It would be great to be able to edit them as well (add, delete)

  13. I prefer sidebars. It seems more efficient and less cluttered.

I just installed Foxmarks and have little experience.
What I want to do is this:

I want to combine bookmarks I have spread across three PCs. Is this possible. I work on the blog, but at times, I'm on different computers and I save the bookmarks to each browser (I should have used a flash drive for the browser and bookmarks.)

So what I want to do is pull in all bookmarks to one 'Master' or Primary bookmark location and then sync back a full list to each PC, so they are all updated with each other's bookmarks.

Hope this is possible. If it is, awesome! what a great tool! You can imagine how valuable that would be and what a time saver!

    Thanks!!

Yes, what you describe is possible. It's what Foxmarks does. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

  15. The previous version (not left panel) worked better on my pocketpc phone (small screen).

Also I'd really like my.foxmarks to use a cookie because I have to enter my login/password each time I want to use my.foxmarks on my pocketpc phone (I use the Opera Mobile web browser). And typing a login/password every time on this small device is a pain.

Other foxmarks is a great service !! I am using it on all my firefox browsers (Windows/Linux).

  16. I only know the sidebar - but I still would perefer it as a non-framed page...

Also it would be grand if one could have the links automatically 'expanded' (maybe through a parameter in the URL or a setting in the account to allow a collapsed as well as an expanded link list?).

In any case: a GREAT tool.

  18. guys,

love the extension but i really did prefer the previous version - simple reason is that frames suck !!

i am unable to install and utilise firefox in a P/T job that i have hence i have to use IE to logon and access my book marks and the frames are horrible, horrible, horrible !!

the best solution would be for the user to have the option to decide how the links open i.e. in a new browser

    cheers for the fantastic extension

  19. It's GREAT that you have put a sidebar, I was missing it. Now to add the possibility of ADDING bookmarks in the browsermode, that would be perfect.

  21. I would really like to see where you can just click on the link and it will go to the site instead of having to have a frame
