Today we made available
Foxmarks 0.89, a minor upgrade to the previously released beta version, 0.88. We're pretty confident that this is the version we'd like to unleash on the general public, so if you're willing to pitch in to test, please download and install and
let us know if you see anything unusual.
So far I've had only one minor gripe. I'm running Foxmarks 0.89 on Firefox 2.0.0.1 on a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.4.8. Every once in awhile (seemingly at random) I receive a popup that my username/password is incorrect and Foxmarks can't log in. I am then prompted to update my login information. I enter the same information that was in there before and it works perfectly. I'm not sure if this happens with every automatic sync or just certain ones but it doesn't seem to happen when I force a sync. Other than that, great product! Thanks!
ReplyDeletein the Mozilla addons site there is version 0.84
ReplyDeleteCould you update it so we can use automatic update?
@Godai71: We submitted 0.89 to the AMO site earlier this week and are awaiting approval from the good people at Mozilla. It should go live any day now.

Why reinvent the wheel? Why not use delicious?
ReplyDelete"Why reinvent the wheel?"
ReplyDeleteFoxmarks helps me to keep my bookmarks the way they are and they are doing a great job at it!
:)
Yes, it would be great if we were to update the firefox extensions page...so we could use auto update and not have to check back here often to find any updates...
ReplyDelete@Gavin:
ReplyDeleteThat's the plan. Foxmarks 0.89 has been submitted to Mozilla -- it's in their hands now. I know they're doing some work on their site now, which probably explains the two-week delay.
Note also that when we update the Firefox Add-ons page, everyone gets the update, so we release updates here first as way to beta test with a smaller audience.
Could you please add buttons for link to the page MyFoxmarks(http://my.foxmarks.com/) or the homepage(http://www.foxmarks.com/) on "Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer "? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI gave up on Foxmarks; lost my bookmarks for the second time without a clue how that happened. I would expect the program to have a error routine that checks on whether it is replacing the bookmarks with an empty file, but it doesn't. Last time I could run a backup, but this time I was too late for that. It's a nice enough idea, but like this it just don't work for me.
ReplyDeletegood luck!
Great! I love it except for the fact that firefox will prompt for the master security password almost as soon as i log in. This is a little annoying to me, does foxmarks' password have to be tied to the other passwords firefox saves?
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome tool. This works every time. I regularly use three or four different computers and this makes it so much easier. Any plans to sync contacts and calender? Thanks.
ReplyDelete@Al: We've gone back and forth on this. If you're using a master password to protect your web passwords, you're either nervous about your browser being accessed by other people or you are paranoid. Either way, it's not clear why your Foxmarks password would want to be protected with any less security than your other web passwords.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, this comes up often enough that we'll consider having a setting that allows the password to be stored in a less secure way than what we do now.
I have the same issue on my computer as Roberto. When running Foxmarks 0.89 on Firefox 2.0.0.1 on a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.4.8, I will also get a popup asking for my password again. It also seems to be random, but once I put in the password the sync will work fine.
ReplyDeleteVery cool product!
@gabers:
ReplyDeleteIf the problem is that Foxmarks keeps forgetting password, the solution is changing a Firefox setting. Please see the following FAQ entry for more info.
Foxmarks Keeps Forgetting My Password
Which version of Foxmarks supports which version of Firefox? I read that some version of Foxmarks are having trouble with Firefox 2.0.0.1, presumably also with 2.0.0.2.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer that such information was placed obviously on the http://www.foxmarks.com/ page, not buried in some obscure blog/wiki/twiki link fest that needs 30 properly chosen clicks for me to reach the information.
@mmmna:
ReplyDeleteThe latest version of Foxmarks works with all released versions of Firefox (starting with 1.5). There's no reason to use anything other than the latest version, which is why we don't talk much about version compatibility.
Where did you read that there were compatibility issues? We'd like to be able to set the record straight.
Can something be done with the password. I had no problem till the new version 0.89. I don't like to keep passwords or any data so I clear everything up when I close the browser and the foxmarks keep popping up with the password problem.
ReplyDeleteI like this service - but I wish it would work on a pocket pc. It does work a little with minimo, but minimo itself is very sluggish and doesn't really work well.
ReplyDeleteExplorer on pocket pc works well with a lot of things but not foxmarks. I guess I have to use a real computer - too bad.
Foxmarks v0.89 duplicate Live Bookmarks [RSS] when I synhronize using combine method on first time.
ReplyDeleteI also strongly support the option to save the Foxmarks password not in the Firefox DB. The reason for the master password is security; you are correct. But I don't know of anyone who considers their bookmarks to be high security. Why not give your user the option?
ReplyDeleteEspecially with the recent spate of login-form-spoofing attention from the tech media, I have become even more insane with my Master Password, enhancing it with extensions such as Master Password Timeout (as advised by SlashDot, etc). So now Foxmarks prompts me for the Master Password not just once / session -- but every 15 min or so for as long as the browser is open.
At this point, if a solution is not devised soon, I'm going to advise against the use of Foxmarks. Which is too bad -- because I'd much rather advise others to use your "independent" extension than Google's browser stync ;-)
@My Previous:
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that there is another option for syncing at Shutdown. I have been enabling this instead of Auto sync (which is annoying indeed with Master Password Timeout). This is much more pleasant, since I am only prompted for the Master Pwd once per session.
However, it would be even BETTER if this option were to sync at Shutdown (to publish changes) and also Startup (to receive them). Realistically, this is the most syncing a person would reasonably require, unless they leave their FF open at multiple sites simultaneously.
How about that? Could we enhance the Sync @ Shutdown to include startup also? :-D
Can anyone help me with this problem: somehow, I changed my master password for FireFox and Foxmarks and can't get back in. I wanted to delete Foxmarks and start over again, but can't find it on the control panel. I can't find any way to disable it or remove it. Can anyone help me??? Thank you. Ste
ReplyDeleteNever mind ... I'm awake now. I found the support page...... oh boy. sd
ReplyDeleteAs for the comments about being paranoid about passwords...yes i am paranoid about some passwords, others i am not.
ReplyDeleteTo me there is a big difference between Firefox remembering the passwords for my bookmarks compared to the passwords for my email, banks accounts, etc. I have my 'low security' passwords (for stuff like foxmarks) and 'high security'... i don't think it is that uncommon.
is there no way to have the password remembered set in a cookie rather than use the password manager?
@Paul Nicholson:
ReplyDeleteGood point! Feel free to add that idea to the suggestions page at http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Suggestions_for_Improvements -- we've always got an eye out for potential improvements to make the Foxmarks extension easier to use!
rock solid application, couldn't live without it.. Would be awesome if this could sync calendar's across computers though...
