Foxmarks 0.89 Available on Add-ons Site

Today, Mozilla officially blessed the latest version of Foxmarks, version 0.89, and made it available to all users on the Add-ons site. This means that users of the previous version will soon get an update notice from Firefox. As always, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest version for the smoothest, creamiest synchronization experience.

The previous post generated some confusion about how this all works, so we wanted to take a moment to explain our release process. We periodically make what we hope are improvements to the Foxmarks extension and, after some validation, make the extension available on our own site as a beta to users who want to be on the bleeding edge and can tolerate the associated risk of using relatively untested software. Users who wish to download these beta versions have to visit our site to do so; there's no automatic upgrade or notification triggered by releases on our own site.

Once we feel that a new version has proved itself to be reliable, we submit it to Mozilla. They run their own validation process -- completely independent of ours -- and, once they are satisfied that the extension meets their quality and reliability standards, they release it on the Add-ons site. We have no control over the timing of this part of the process; once we submit the extension to Mozilla, it is entirely out of our hands. Once they have completed their validation process and released the extension on the Add-ons site, users start to receive automatic upgrade notifications.

That's it in a nutshell. If you have questions, please let us know here.

  1. I get a certificate warning because in the standard config sync.foxmarks.com is set, but the connection goes via sync.foxcloud.com obviously. I run foxmarks with https. When I change the server to sync.foxcloud.com than it seems to be OK. I had't this problem with the previous version.

Furthermore I don't understand (well, I have a clue) why Firefox quits, when I press the cancel button at the new Dialog at the end. I believe the most people expect, that Firefox keeps running after that, regardless it is possible or not to implement. It's just not intuitive. At least the button needs to renamed like quit without saving.

  2. I absolutely LOVE foxmarks. I use two computers regularly and it saves me all the hassle of losing my bookmarks!

Just updated but now Firefox is behaving strangely, quitting unexpectedly, not starting at all, losing scrollbars. Anyone else with similar problems? I had to resort to a Safe Mode Firefox start to get thngs back running but it's still a little unstable.

This is the only update I've done today so I can't think of anything else to pin the problems on.

  3. I think it was a freak error. I've disabled my addons and then reenabled them one by one, finishing with Foxmarks.

    Everything seems ok now.

  4. I've used Powermarks in the past, and have been looking for a replacement for awhile- anyone switched to Foxmarks from Powermarks, and what issues might there be - importing for one? I have 10,000+ bookmarks in Powermarks and importing them into the Firefox bookmarks program really slows it down.

  5. I had attempted to use the Google Bookmarks plugin, but as it went to a FuitadNet box, I was disinclined to acquiesce the certificate (I've been a FuitadNet customer before).
Foxmarks gets high rating from me, as it's become much easier to manage my bookmarks on several different computers. Though the only suggestion I could have is multiple profiles per account (ie, my work computer has work specific bookmarks that my home computer couldn't possibly need, and likewise, there are bookmarks on my home computer that I really shouldn't be looking at while at work). One login, multiple profiles.

  6. I can find any instructions. I'm fearful of running Foxmarks on my two computers because I don't know which computer's bookmarks will take precedence. I find no explanation of this anywhere. Will Foxmarks give me a chance to control which bookmarks are used? Will I lose some?

  8. Since updating to this version of Foxmarks.
I get 'Foxmarks is busy' on any manual syncs.
This is happening on 2 of the 3 computers that I use Foxmarks and I haven't had a normal sync since the update even from those 2 computers.
One is running Vista and another is running Redhat so I don't think it's a problem with windows. Although the sole working pc is a mac.

  9. I like the idea. Still use it but I have had to stop auto sync as it
virtually stalls my older xp machine and even on my new dual core vista machine firefox will stop responding all together. Which of course happens during the most inconvenient times.

  11. @Sam Med.:

There was a problem last night with the new Mozilla Add-ons site. They seem to have reverted back to the old site today, and you should find that you can now download and install without difficulty.

  14. Cheers and bravo on the concept and current implementation!

Is there to be a "update" which includes the install script that seamonkey is begging (well may s.m. is not but I am) for? I tried to follow the tutorial at http://users.skynet.be/fa258499/hackexttutorial.html

to see if I could get an install, but unfortunately, I am either too tired, too dense or some not so delicious combination of the two to achieve an install script to go with the package.

Since my job splits my off work time between computers in distant cities, I would love to have a method of keeping my bookmarks synchronized between the machines and while I could carry a pendrive back and forth, much prefer the idea of the bookmarks being available whether I remembered such a drive or not.

Also, the concept of merging the bookmark files on both machines as opposed to manually sorting them (a process I have started many times but always get lost in) strikes me as a mandatory feature for someone who shares my working conditions.
