Earlier today, Michael Arrington posted a nice piece about Foxmarks on his influential blog, Techcrunch. As his post suggests, we are indeed working on a significant expansion of the current service offering. We're still pretty early in the development cycle, but what we're building is shaping up into something we think you'll find both useful and interesting. We're pretty darned excited about the potential, but at the same time, we don't want to crank up the hype; being the modest folks that you've always known us to be, vaporware is anathema to us. As we get closer to a public launch, we'll be talking in more detail about what we're up to.
In the meantime, we wanted to address a couple of issues that the Techcrunch post will no doubt raise. First, if you're concerned about the privacy of your data, don't be. Before a public launch, we'll offer you tools to opt-out. Your privacy continues to be of paramount importance to us. See our privacy policy for more details.
Second, the post suggests that Foxmarks is strictly a Mitch & Todd show. That's an accurate picture from a year ago, but no more. We'll be doing introductions for the rest of the team shortly.
Finally, there's a whole other avenue of product development that isn't covered at all in the Techcrunch post. We've been listening to users of the current synchronization service and working to incorporate the best ideas and most important feedback. We'll be talking more about that work in the coming weeks, too.
Stay tuned for more info. And until then, happy syncing!
I like the idea - i was surprised you don't support OpenID - that would be very cool, although i have signed up and installed the sychronizer.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you should allow exports from IE (both IE and Firefox irritate me almost daily) as well - that would be an easy thing to add.
If you need help translating to Spanish, let me know.
Thank you Todd and Mitch for the ongoing contributions that are making something beautiful out of our favourite bookmarking service that help to keep on making Firefox our favourite browser even better!
ReplyDeleteWill be happy to get acquainted with the other team members.

[...] Mitch Kapor’s (inventor of Lotus 1-2-3, co-founder of the EFF) bookmark-synchronizing utility for Firefox-based browsers, foxmarks, is about to enter the market of human-powered search engines - a space currently heating up - not only since the recent launch of Mahalo. the search engine will utilize user-generated metadata on URLs to deliver - according to TechCrunch - superior search-results compared to Google - especially for popular search-terms, which naturally suffer the most under SEO-efforts. thinking about foxmarks, three questions arise: [...]

ReplyDeleteWeird.... My foxmarks stopped synchronizing. I even force the synchronize (and the dates on both computers show today), but the changes made in one browser aren't shown on the other.
ReplyDeleteWell,
ReplyDeleteI'm sad because I'm running 3.0 alpha 6 (helping testing the new builds for the community) but no bookmarks synchronization for me :( . If you guys have a build somewhere which I can use, please lemme know. Cheers!
@shirish:
ReplyDeleteNo, there's no 3.0-compatible build laying around, alas. As you may know, Fx3 with Places has a completely new bookmark backend, so this is a substantial port. We'll be working to get a compatible version of Foxmarks going before Fx3 ships.
Firefox 2.0.0.5 tells me that Foxmarks cannot run on it....is there an upgrade coming?
ReplyDelete@Nick Gill:
ReplyDeleteThe released version of Foxmarks runs fine on 2.0.0.5. I assume that you were having a transitory problem of some kind. If you're still having trouble, please contact customer support for help.
