My Foxmarks goes Mobile

In our ongoing effort to provide you with extreme powers of flexibility in accessing your bookmarks, we are pleased to announce the alpha launch of My Foxmarks Mobile, ideally suited for use on mobile phones.

Starting with the standard desktop version of My Foxmarks, we boiled it down to its essence, leaving you with a tiny version of My Foxmarks that's optimized to your phone's small screen and for the most frequent task when you're on the go -- quickly accessing one of your bookmarks.

We're releasing My Foxmarks Mobile as an alpha version because, frankly, our testing on different phones has been less than comprehensive. We know it works well on our phones. Does it work on yours? Give it a shot and let us know in the comments section here.

  1. I'd built my own bookmark tracker (just for my use) and abandoned it because I liked the Foxfire sync functionality of Foxmarks so much. As part of my tool, I flagged sites that were mobile friendly. Then when I went to http://mobile.patrickturner.net I had just links I'd flagged mobile friendly. This would be a great option for Foxmarks now that you have a mobile version! Thanks for a great tool!

  2. Well, it works perfectly on my BlackBerry Curve. Thanks for the great tool!

  3. Hi,

mobile es great. Two suggestions - make the login more mobile friendly, i.e. even less "web eye candy" (have a look at netvibes.com mobile offering) and allow the user-name to be put into the URL so that on my mobile I do not have ever re-enter my username to log-in.

For the the support of mobile vs. regular bookmarks, one idea is to mark those bookmarks that should appear on the mobile version, another approach is to allow to set specific start-folder for the mobile version.

But that depends on how people are organizing their mobile bookmarks. I have a special folder in mine that I can use when I am on GPRS/UMTS on the road on my laptop as well as on my mobile.

  4. It works on my Samsung X700.

The login screen is still to overloaded. It would be easier to handle, if I could open http://myfoxname.foxmarks.com/m/ and that would result in a very blank page just with a single form to enter my password.

As I like to sort my bookmarks thematically and dont't like to double this order structure for mobile and normal bookmarks, I would prefer a possibility to tag them as "mobile-ready". That would result in nonredundant bookmarks, where just the tagged ones are displayed when logged in through the mobile.

  5. Works fine on the Nokia N95, although the login screen renders in HTML rather than WML/WHTML.

  6. It does not work on the Nokia 6230. After login, the error message is: invalid file format. Perhaps there is an invalid MIME type or something.

  7. Hi!

I really love Foxmark, it makes my life so easy, thanks for that.
But there is one feature missing --> an export from the my.foxmarks.com web-based overview.

    Cheers

  8. Sorry, no luck om my SE w810i with the built in browser. I get as far as the login page, but the input boxes for username and password are non-functional. Opera Mini 4 beta seems to work though :-)

  9. @jdahlrot:

Interesting -- I have the same phone and it works fine for me. Are you highlighting the text entry fields and pressing the center button to enter text?

  10. this is a great concept and will become one of the most useful tools on my mobile! I had already saved a Foxmarks bookmark on my mobile, but the login process and display were not optimal.

One current problem: your CaseSensitive loginuser names create a login error on some mobiles. The Nokia E-series devices (and maybe other symbian) like to start the login name entry with a Capital letter when you start typing. It is a pain to have to goback and retype the first letter as lowerCase.

I would also echo the comments above on a simpler login screen, and UserName in URL, to make login quicker. On a mobile, it is all about speed and fewer data entry points.

  11. Great tool! One feature I would like to suggest is the DMOZ directory style, whereby you can tag one hyperlink to one or more directories. More and more hyperlinks are now stored in my Foxmarks account and sometimes you forget which categroy at that time you find it most logical

  12. I have a Samsung BlackJack and it works beautifully on my phone :).

  13. I checked it out on my Treo 700p with Blazer browser and here are my impressions: (1) bookmarked feeds are not accessible (2) a search box would save a lot of time (3) my browser keeps complaining of an invalid security certificate mismatch (4) I'd like to have a Javascript bookmarklet to add sites from my mobile device

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have a couple more ideas: (1) allow option of downloading all the bookmarks as an html file, just like Firefox will let you export your bookmarks as an html file.
    (2) a foxmarks javaphone app similar to googles gmail mobile app.

  15. Hello. I have problem with my SE K800i it said "Large page. Content incompletely shown." There will be anything on screen. :(

331 bookmarks totally but in first page ~25 bookmarks + 10 folders

  16. Seems to work well on my Blackberry 8830. Nice job.

  17. I get an error 500 screen

    ReplyDelete
  18. Works fine on my Nokia E65.

The login page is a bit heavy, but the fundamental concept works fine for me.

Absent any built-in feature for the mobile web, I guess I would just make a mobile web folder at the top of my foxmarks list for mobile use.

    Well done to the team!

  21. Works fine on a Nokia E61i on WLAN.

  22. I'm not sure which thread to post this on, but here's a suggestion:

If there's any way to make the bookmarks in Firefox take up more than one row, it would be a great improvement.

I love the product, and am very, very appreciative to all who've had a hand in developing it!

  24. Just had a go using the minimo browser on my Nokia 770 and it works.

the default browser is Opera based , I think...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, like some people before me have mentioned an export bookmark function is almost vital for this kind of thing

    ReplyDelete
  26. It works well on my Blackberry Curve too.

Suggestion: it would be nice if there was some way to distinguish between folders and actual links.

    Great job!

  28. @Huschke:

Thanks for letting us know! Does that happen *every* time you access the mobile version of my.foxmarks.com, or occasionally? If every time, could you write to support@foxmarks.com with your Foxmarks username so we can look into it further?

    Thanks!

  30. On my Blackberry 8820 the folder icons seem to overwrite the bookmark text. Please see http://www.flickr.com/photos/8643952@N06/1904733698 .

On the small screen it can be a little hard to see the text this way. Have I got some settings wrong somewhere?

  31. @David:

Thanks for the screenshot! We're still working out some of the cross-platform kinks in the mobile version, but I've made sure to note this particular issue for our next digging-into.

  32. @huschke:

Thanks for the extra information; as I mentioned in email, it appears that you need only follow the instructions found here to fix it:

Let us know if that doesn't work.

  33. Greetings,

Unfortunately, I am unable to get the full or the mobile version of Foxmarks to load into Pocket IE on my AT&T 8525 (HTC Hermes) running Windows Mobile 6.0

I had already tried the full version and was excited to find that a mobile version was in the works...ah well...such is life.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I discovered that if I open http://login.foxmarks.com/login/mobile?referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fmy.foxmarks.com%2Fm%2F instead of simply http://myfoxmarks.com/m/ that it works. Not sure if most people will figure that out or not.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah, turns out I can log in to Foxmarks Mobile using the log URL above, but I can't actually get to my bookmarks...back to the old drawing board!

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Aaron Jackson:

Very strange; what behavior does it have when it fails to work? Do you see error messages, or any other indicators as to where the problem might be?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Stumbled across this looking for a module to display Foxmarks in Netvibes. This actually works great in a Netvibes Web Page module. It also works great on my iPhone. But, the text size is too small.

    Nice job!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good job! Works pretty well for me using Opera Mini 4 on N95-8GB. I get the occasional "Pylon" server error page but it usually works if I retry. It seems that this error only occurs when I try to access sub-folders of bookmarks. Looking forward to the 1.0 release version.

    Vince

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Vince: Thanks for pointing that out; it appears to only happen with version 2 bookmark sets, which the mobile version only recently was adapted to work with. We'll see if we can hunt down what's causing that behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Is http://my.foxmarks.com/m down? I seem to be getting an 'Internal Server Error' on the website.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  41. @David Macdonald:

Because you had attempted to use Foxmarks 2 earlier, your account was in an interim state that made My Foxmarks Mobile unhappy. It would have straightened itself out as soon as you upgraded to Foxmarks 2 and did your first sync, but we took the liberty of reverting your account back to Foxmarks 1 status. So it should work for you now. Oh, and it should continue to work when you upgrade.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Todd,

Thanks. And oops, I did it again. I have since upgraded to version 2 and it worked for awhile but I get the 'Internal Server Error' again.

If you could work your magic again and set my account to version 2 I would appreciate it. I have a couple of issues with version 2 (as we've discussed through support) but I am committed to version 2 and won't be going back to version 1. So hopefully I won't cause you any more headaches going back and forth between the two and messing up access to the mobile site.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks again,
    David

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, and did not know about it. Thanks for the information ...

  45. Hi

Can't login using Nokia 7360. I can enter username and password but can't move to the login text/box to do the actual login process. The word login just appears, as text, at the bottom right of my screen and I can only get as far as the password field and no further.

    Thanks

  48. With my old Acer n50 PDA the Foxmarks Mobile login does NOT work.

After some testing i found, that der Submit-Button-Tag is not recognized by the built in Browser (MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320).

I have saved the Login-Page locally an replaced the BUTTON-Tag with an INPUT-Tag. It works nice!

I think, it is a good idea to change this on the login-page.
BUTTON is new in HTML 4.0 and not as widely supported as INPUT. For compatibility with old browsers, INPUT should generally be used instead of BUTTON.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It doesn't let me log in with my N95 default browser. Just goes round in a loop and keeps asking for my password.

Works fine on the Opera Mini 4 browser.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have been using Foxmarks Mobile on my Treo 650 and now my Treo 680. With the exception of the Login button not rendering properly (shows as a blue-tinted bar with no button-press action), the alpha foxmarks mobile page works just fine on the Treo's Blazer browser.

I think the addition of a small folder graphic would enhance the useability without slowing down the loading. As it displays now, you can not tell bookmark folders from individual links.

  51. Great Feature!
Maybe your homepage can recognize a pda browser and auto-redirect to mobile login... but I discover today this feature and this is all I need!

    Thank you!

  52. Just tried this out and it works perfectly on my RIM BlackBerry Curve 8300... It's neat, organized, visually appealing and fast to load/navigate.

The only problem I really have is that there appears to be no log-out option - not a huge issue and I could probably live without it, but I do worry about security not having it...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wonderful!!! It's ok with my Blackberry 8310. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Seems to work on the Blackberry 8820. Only "oddity" I see is the layout of the content on screen when viewing the main list after log-in seems...er...off. ;) The left margin on-screen tends to overlap with the folder icon...

  55. The login page http://my.foxmarks.com/m/ on the iPhone has EXTREMELY small text. Problem!

Also, you have to login again EACH TIME... why can't you set a cookie and it just works???

Also, how about filling this market gap and making an iPhone specific website ???

    http://iphone.foxmarks.com OR http://my.foxmarks.com/iphone

    Would make sense!!!!

  57. Foxmarks Mobile works great on my LG VX8300. Two features I'd love: 1) a "go to URL" box 2) ability to add a new bookmark.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I tried this on the ipod touch and it the login text entry box looks way to tiny, I hve to zoom in on it in order to login. Once logged in things worked well. My one other complaint is that bookmarks were a bit to close together and I accidentally selected the wrong bookmarks.

  61. Does not work with the Palm 700w running IE on Windows Mobile Version 5.0.

Displays login form with no problems but submitting the form displays an Error 404 on a pylons Rapid Web Development page. The url is showing as http://login.foxmarks.com/login/.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Followup.

The 404 error only happens from the phone. If I use a regular PC browser I can log into the mobile page. Username is the email I posted with.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Jason: Thanks for the details! You're actually seeing what a lot of other early-version mobile IE users are seeing--the earlier versions of IE mis-interpret our intent with the form submission for login, and so get a 404 there. We're trying to figure out the right fix within Pylons, and should have something soon-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  64. hi, i also get the "error 404" while trying to logon to http://login.foxmarks.com/login/.

  67. Works great on my Palm LifeDrive browser (aka Blazer). My request is add the ability to add, edit or delete my bookmarks. Currently, I must either wait to get to a desktop to make changes (assuming I remember to) or switch mobile browsers to Opera Mini only so I can use the full foxmarks web site to edit on the go. Frankly, it's all kind of kludgey, just to edit some simple text.

I don't recall this requested yet, so this may sound like an excessive feature set to some. To those I say internet-capable mobile devices are no longer mere sattelite devices to a desktop computer. These can and do serve for many as their capable standalone computing device, viewing editing and creating content, untethered to a desktop. I interact with my bookmarks often, so editing easily on the go in a mobile version would be significant for me.

  68. Since some 3 or 4 days I cannot login into mobile foxmarks
Using Nokia N82 with S60v3fp1 browser. I remember that this used to work just a week ago. v2 did not load correctly, but v1 worked well. Have you changed anything in the meantime?

    ReplyDelete
  69. just tried to access my mobile bookmarks via "sharing" feature, but it looks worse. Also, when I turn on sharing for my root bookmarks folder, it does not include subfolders so it is a pretty useless at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  70. @Solnyshok: Version 1.0.1 of Foxmarks is no longer supported. If you're having trouble logging in, please email us via the "Support" link in the upper right corner with specifics regarding error messages you're seeing and we'll do our best to help.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I was referring to versions of mobile bookmarks , as in
    v2= my.foxmarks.com
    v1= my.foxmarks.com/v1

but the real problem is that I cannot login into service with my S60 browser, I know correct login/password, it works with FF3 but not on my mobile handset. It worked several days ago, so that is why I asked if you changed anything in login procedure so that it does not work with Nokia phones now?

    ReplyDelete
  72. @Solnyshok: You should only use http://mobile.foxmarks.com/; v1 is no longer supported. We don't provide support here on the blog, so if you're having problems, please email us.

  76. Wanted to second the call for an iPhone-specific version of this. While it's great to have my bookmarks available via the web, this just BEGS for an iPhone-targeted implementation.

    Keep up the great work!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'd like to throw in my two bits for an iPhone specific module for this as well. Currently, Foxmarks fits EVERY one of my bookmark needs except this small oversight. Something that would integrate with the iPhone browser from my 6 computers with Foxmarks on it would be great!

  79. Was considering using foxmarks if there's a way to access them from my iPhone. Has any progress been made on this? (either officially or third-party) Cheers, Ant

    ReplyDelete
  80. @Fabian: Search, eh? Stay tuned...

@econtoller: Try updating the firmware on your phone. We've had reports that this fixes the issue that the Nokia browser has refusing cookies on login.

@AntUK: http://my.foxmarks.com/mobile should work just fine on the iPhone.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Agree totally with the above iPhone comments.

I use Firefox rather than Safari, and it's nice to have FM available.

Please implement the excellent suggestions above, especially the one about the continuous logins.

The iPhone doesn't have either a Form Enter feature nor copy and past, and I hate typing in my login and password.

Please do this quickly, and you'll gain tremendous market share.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Works on my iPhone, however, it could be better. I realize this is a general mobile version, but I am going to comment on how it would be better for the iPhone:

-Normally iPhone web apps fill the whole screen, Foxmarks Mobile does not. The links are too small to click on unless I zoom in.
-It would be nice to have a simple editor: add & remove option (mainly add)

I am really glad you all are doing this, it helps me greatly.

    Thanks.

  84. Unfortunately, foxmarks mobile doesn't seem to work on my new LG 9100 KeyBo. The login screen comes up fine, but when I enter my username and password and press the login button, I am taken back to the login page, with the forms cleared, and no error messages to be seen.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to be able to access FoxMarks on the go.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Dan Labute: Generally the problem you describe is caused by the browser refusing to set cookies on a 302 redirect. If you can try a different browser software on your phone, that might fix things for you.

also would be nice to be able to add to it from a webpage in safari (press the"+" button and have a menu item for "Add to Foxmarks") but I know apple's restrictions wont be allowing that anytime soon.
