Server Certificate Change

For those of you out there using the HTTPS option in the Foxmarks add-on, you may get some warnings about a "certificate error" when syncing. This is due to our having finally moved over from sync.foxcloud.com to using the more appropriately-named sync.foxmarks.com. You can eliminate the certificate error by updating your Foxmarks settings to use the sync.foxmarks.com server, as detailed in the now-updated wiki entry on this topic. If that's still not working for you, do please let us know!

  1. Yo. Thank you for the great sync tool. The only issue I have is that if I set Foxmarks on auto, it synchss up way too frequently.

Every time it does its magic, it locks up my browser of course, until it's done downloading/uploading the bookmarks.

I don't want to turn off the auto sync because I'll likely forget to synch up my bookmarks and that defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

Is there anyway to set the interval between synching secessions to 6 or 12 hours or ever 24 hours? Ideally I just need it to synch one a day if that frankly.

    Thanks.

  2. @IGT: Sorry to hear you're having some problems. We've tried to engineer the Foxmarks add-on to not overwhelm the browser, mainly by only checking every five minutes to see if there are any changes in the bookmarks. Only if there are changes in the bookmarks (or on the server version of the bookmarks) will Foxmarks start doing some work.

Even then, the only time that Foxmarks should cause performance penalties in the Firefox browser is when there are bookmark updates on both the server *and* in your local bookmarks set. We're working on fixes for that in future updates, but for now it shouldn't occur frequently enough to cause problems. If that's what causes the problem for you (i.e., you're sharing a remote computer with someone who's updating your bookmarks at the same time you are), you might want to only disable auto-sync on one of the machines--granted, not an ideal solution, but you could choose one where you'd notice immediately that a bookmark is missing, and that would remind you to sync manually.

Another case where this might happen is if you're using your own remote server to store your bookmarks, running FTP or WebDAV, which doesn't recognize etags. In that case, switching to the Foxmarks server would probably fix your problem. More information on running your own Foxmarks server can be found here:

    http://www.foxcloud.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Using_Your_Own_Server

...finally, your point about changing the interval is intriguing. It's not presently possible to change the sync interval in the Foxmarks user interface, but I've passed that idea along to the others for further consideration in later releases.

    Hope this helps,

  3. Hi Eric,

Ok, cool. Well you pegged right on. I am using an FTP to store my bookmarks. I would rather keep it that way so I guess for the time being I will just disable the auto-update and do it manually.

And yes, I hope it's possible in a future releases to just update at particular time or interval, that'll keep bookmark junkies like myself from getting frustrated by a browser that freezes up until it's done working it's magic.

Thanks again for the great add-on and I look forward to future releases. Despite my current minor irritation, this one I am recommending to friends and clients for sure.

  4. Eric,
Love this add-on. This was something i was looking for a longtime. This is why I hated IE, I couldn't easily manage bookmarks.

Now synchronizing my browser dictionaries would be nice feature too.

  5. @Brad:

Thanks for the compliment! Synchronizing browser dictionaries is a new one I hadn't encountered before, but I like your thinking. Definitely feel free to add that to our Suggestions wiki page!
