We have just released an update to the Foxmarks 2 extension for Firefox. If you have never been able to sync one or more of your computers using Foxmarks 2, please download and install this version. If you still get an error attempting to manually sync, press the Help button for more information about what to do next.
Feel free to note your experience with the new version as a comment here.
Good Day!
ReplyDeleteI had problems with release 2.0.34 . Now I am using 1.0.1 without any problems. The setting options for server are better than in the newer version. No option to select the type of server are given any more. The connection to my FTP-server fails and to the FOXMARKS server works neither.
All in all, I am very pleased with the funtionality of your product. No more confusion in my bookmarks any more. Thank you.
As a note, I'd be more than glad to stress test your new releases if you'd like!
ReplyDeleteI said in my previous post I have well over 2000 bookmarks.
I have so many because I find a lot of material from both home and work that I need to track. I was using google notes for a while but your tool allows me to make tons of very specific folders and subfolders and then log absolutely everything I find so that I can quickly get to it no matter where I am.
I use the information for investing and blogging purposes and your tool allows me to accumulate 10+ links/day from each location so that I am never without my information.
Also, I have many other satellite sites where my friends use the tool to just download what I am accumulating so that they too can quickly access the information that they want. Stumbleupon, google, social bookmarking sites like digg and reddit are great but sometimes they just want to see what I have cataloged into these specific areas.
Thanks for sticking with it.
ReplyDeleteThis last upgrade allowed the first sync since Dec 21st.
Gift wrapped appreciation.
I know you guys were very busy with the v2 upgrade issues and I understand this was a low priority concern but now that things are starting to be more stable I was wondering if there was an estimate time frame on when a Firefox 3.0 compatible Foxmarks version would be available? Foxmarks is the must have add-ons I am and I think a lot of us are waiting for to switch permanently to the new 3.0. Thanks for the great products!
ReplyDeleteYippee! My second machine sync'ed for the first time today, both machines now syncing fine, still on 2.0.34, keeping fingers crossed that all is now well. Thanks for the Christmas present, guys :-)
ReplyDeleteBTW, what happened to 2.0.35 ?
Where are my bookmarks? Suddenly all gone!!!! Please HLP!!!!
ReplyDeleteGuys, congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI trashed you in a previous post, but with this release, all is back to normal.
Thank you for a great plugin!
David P.
P.S I hope that the painful lessons learned in this upgrade will be applied to all future upgrades - less gray hairs for you and us...
I just started using Foxmarks with the 2.0.34 version and never did get it to sync one of my computers. 2.0.36 didn't seem to fix it either as still getting the error. I would like to try the 1.01 build but am unsure, do I have to uninstall the 2.x versions from both PCs and then reinstall the 1.01 version and then do the initial sync on them both again?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Foxmarks is totally locked up now. Can't access my account on line, keeps saying my password is incorrect. Getting the error message about a mismatch between the on line and local bookmark sets.
ReplyDeleteTotally frustrated with this add in, it simply does not work as it should.
Getting "our servers are totally overwelmed" message. Is this just today, or does this happen a lot, please?
ReplyDeleteI got problem since upgraded to the v2.0.34 then v2.0.36. It stuck in the "Performing merge...". I leave my machine on not to sleep over night. Next day, the status still in the performing merge. Also, I have upgraded all my Foxmarks on my both PC and Macintosh platforms and it's the same problems. The latest version is not working at all.
ReplyDeleteInstalled the v2.0.34 version on two computers and it worked! No problems encountered so far... Keep up the good work guys!
ReplyDeleteWeird! Hey Paul, curiously, did you have new account/installation for the v2.0.34? Both my PC and Macintosh has problem and stuck in "Performing merge..." process. Looks like the sync has froze.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
ReplyDeletethe new version works, and for me it has been since early december that i've seen version 2 finish a synch. i'm grateful you've worked so hard, even right up to christmas day.

great day !!
ReplyDeletei had problems to sync with my webdav-server and version 2.0.34.
now with .36 it works perfekt.
thanks for this "present" ;-)
herby
I have been using my own server with FoxMarks 1. 2.0.34 was a disaster. 2.0.36 only slightly better. Either I get hung on "verifying account", or a "Not Found" error when I try to synchronize.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that worked was installing it on a different computer and doing an upload.
Took 6 days to get 2.0.34 to work properly on 2 of my 3 computers. My work computer still will not sync and kept getting hung on "Verifying Account".
ReplyDeleteI updated to 2.0.36 and wound up getting proxy settings errors. I followed instrux to take care of that issue, and then it took a long time to synchronize...but it finally worked.
Hope it lasts...
One question, though. Should we upgrade to 2.0.36 on all machines? Even the ones that finally worked with 2.0.34?
Uh Oh, I woke up to "Foxmarks has encountered an error." Hopefully, this does not mean a return to last week's problems....
ReplyDeleteJust upgraded to 2.0.36 and still will not sync up correctly. BLAH! I have been being patient knowing that I was one of the few front runners grabbing the update but come on! I know I should not complain about a free service but there is some frustration here!
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, seriously, Thanks for a great tool when it is working and keep up the good fight. Maybe you will have a great new years present for the few of us that it is not working for yet! :-)
well, after praising 2.0.36 yesterday, today i came in to work and i get an endless -- aka stuck -- synch process. there is not even a way to stop (trying) synching, so once it gets started and stuck it just goes on and on. i have to close the browser (with auto synching turned off, of course) to get it to stop trying / unstuck.
ReplyDeleteso now i'm sorry that i'm afraid to try it again.
"google browser synch" works, thank goodness. but i sure preferred foxmarks, with "my foxmarks" as an online option at other computers.
may i suggest you continue supporting 1.0.1 for the indefinite future? it is solid (works) and the features plenty good enough for me.
ken
To all the whingers: THIS IS A FREE PROGRAM. If you don't like the growing pains, go develop your own add-on.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work and effort, Foxmarks team!
still unable to sync....
ReplyDeleteI had problems for a few days, but its worked flawlessly for the last three days! I REALLY enjoy the new features!
ReplyDeleteJason B, that's a fine attitude, but a free program that doesn't work really is worth what you paid for it.
ReplyDeleteI'm using to full satisfaction foxmarks on 3 PCs. One of them is the company laptop. When I'm at the office I'm behind a firewall and use an automatic proxy configuration URL (on the local intranet). When at home, no proxy is required, but still configured. Previously (1.0) this posed no problems, now at 2.0.34/36 I get a proxy configuration error when I'm at home; only if manually disable the proxy syncing is fine again. Obviously this is not convenient for me to switch on/off the proxy each time. For normal browsing this is not required, apparently Firefox ignores the proxy URL if it is not available.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to get the 1.0 proxy behaviour back?
Thank you in advance.
Great job guys! Thanks for not giving up. I'm up and running on both computers. The additional installation wasn't needed (so far).
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work!
Lora
I cannot synchronize. I've tried several times with no avail:
ReplyDeletehere are my log entries:
[2007-12-27 10:40:58] Progress: ({status:1, msg:"Writing to sync file..."})
[2007-12-27 10:40:58] >>> POST http://sync.foxmarks.com/sync/bookmarks/putchanges
[2007-12-27 10:40:58] >>> Body is: {"baserev":7,"commands": /* removed... see note below */
(NOTE: above line is 505,566 characters long)
[2007-12-27 10:42:39] >> onStreamComplete with status Operation successful, 108 bytes.
[2007-12-27 10:42:39] >>> Callback(({status:503, message:"QueuePool limit of size 1 overflow 0 reached, connection timed out, timeout 30"})
[2007-12-27 10:42:39] Notify(({status:503, msg:"The server is currently unavailable. Please try again later."}))
[2007-12-27 10:42:39] Progress: ({status:503, msg:"The server is currently unavailable. Please try again later."})
[2007-12-27 10:42:39] Returned error: The server is currently unavailable. Please try again later.(503)
Upon seeing the body which is about 500K in size, my guess is that the server is timing out when the "putchanges" command is being executed.
The body is so big because some of the book mark has icons embedded in them. If it helps you, I can send the whole body in a separate email. The browser froze when I was trying to paste the whole body here.
Thanks for your support and as others have expressed, the foxmarks is such a great tool that I cannot do away with.

Hi. HELP NEEDED. As soon as i did the update on my 2nd computer, it over wrote my original bookmarks. Went to the back up ones, they were all the same as the computer. How can i get my old ones back? Please, please, please.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Danny
I want to revert to a previous version of my bookmarks, from just an hour ago!
ReplyDeleteI think my Mac finally upgraded to the new version of Foxmarks, synced and is fine, but it's newly uploaded data is NOT my most current data...
My PC had the new Foxmarks (2.0.34) for a while and was all synchronized with the site, recently organized, my most current data (the bookmarks I want)
About an hour ago my PC synced with the site and now all my organization and favicons have reverted to the old data from the recent Mac sync. Lots of organizing time is apparently down the drain!
Is there a way to revert to a set from before the last sync? Basically to undo the last su=ync?
Is there a way to set one computer to be the "master set" so it will only incorporate approved changes form the other computer ("keep this version over that version" like the method used with Palm sync or Pocket PC or network sync) ?
corrected typo:
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to revert to a set from before the last sync? Basically to undo the last sync?
I think I have the same issue as the previous poster: Danny.
ReplyDeleteWe both want to revert to a previous set - before the last sync.
@Dr Zen:
ReplyDeleteThat's almost like saying Windows is worth it's weight in gold... oh, wait, software is weightless. o.0;
I am still having same issue as j park
ReplyDeleteIt goes and goes and goes and about a minute later... it times out.
What is strange is that this seems to be specific to 2.0
I can only assume that some changes were put in place to help keep people from uploading massive files but some of us have very large collections of bookmarks.
As I said in 3 previous posts starting on the day before christmas and in a help ticket that I've sent three updates to, I have over 2000 bookmarks. I would never diss free software so if it just isn't in the plans to work I am sure that I can find another tool but are there any plans to help v2.0 deal with these very large sets of bookmarks?
Thanks,
Charles
And voila! it all works now!
ReplyDeleteFoxmarks 2.0.36 fixed the problems I was experiencing with 2.0.34 and had temporarily corrected by returning to 1.0.1
Thank you for making a good product.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
..F
For all you people that are having issues, I have them too. I have 1400 bookmarks (I track various sites and need access to various web tools and don't want to have to find them again). I actually moved on to a few other bookmark syncing tools and if they worked, they didn't work as well as Foxmarks when it works!
ReplyDeleteSome created duplicates (nightmare)
Some did not retain the order of bookmarks and directories.
Some took over a minute to sync.
Some locked the browser while it was syncing (that aggravated me)
All in all, I'm sticking around until something is better. Foxmarks better get it right soon. I'm only here because I realize that when it works...it works well.
If you are having problems syncing... downloading or uploading always works for me!

Awesome! I'm fully back up and running!
ReplyDeleteSince the update, one machine worked great, the other wouldn't sync no matter what I tried.
Be sure to check the FAQ and Wiki if you're still having troubles:
http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_User_Support
My solution was to back up my local bookmarks on the failing machine, then let Foxmarks overwrite my local copies on that one machine, it downloaded them and has worked perfectly since then.
The error I was receiving was not very helpful, I would have assumed a server problem, not a corrupt local bookmark problem or whatever it was:
[2007-12-28 14:53:36] >> onStreamComplete with status Operation successful, 108 bytes.
[2007-12-28 14:53:36] >>> Callback(({status:503, message:"QueuePool limit of size 1 overflow 0 reached, connection timed out, timeout 30"})

Hi,
ReplyDeleteeven with Foxmarks v2.0.36 i'm not able to sync more than one computer.
Maybe FoxM. plugin doesn't works on Leopard, the last Macintosh osx?
ReplyDeleteOn Tiger it works very well, but in Leopard it gives an error and ask for stop trying to synk, for a "unusual but dangerous bug in Firefox...", (don't remember the exact phrase, it was in italian language, my language, but now I'm in office and not at home!).
Guys, have a good time!
Fede
I was getting an "internal server error" for the longest time. I figured out that I needed to increase my cache size under the networking tab in options. Sync works fine now.
ReplyDelete@MikeB:
ReplyDeleteThat's a surprising discovery. Can you make it fail again by decreasing your cache size back to what it was before?
Does Foxmarks 2 need cookies? When accepting cookies for "foxmarks.com", it works fine...
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the "36 version"? The link on the foxmarks.com redirects to the Mozilla Extensions site, where "34 version" is still present...
ReplyDeleteMaking changes to the properties of a bookmark, other than the URL line, does not change the visible Foxmarks icon to the "Foxmarks has changes to synchronize" icon. I'm using 2.0.36 on three computers, and am concerned that this could mean that "cosmetic" changes to existing bookmarks (Name, Keywords, Description) may not get properly synchronized. Since the change in appearance of the icon is the only indication I have that the local sync file was updated (and will get uploaded - then synchronized to the other computers), I would either like to have that icon change take place immediately - regardless of what has been added/deleted/updated in one's bookmarks - or have the team check to see why that isn't happening.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff. Thanks a lot for this time-saving add-on!

As Harlan reports, Foxmarks 2.0.36 is not working on my Linux machine (Ubuntu Gutsy). My account is working under Vista and XP, but I have been getting forbidden errors under Linux. Has the Foxmarks team tested under Linux?
ReplyDeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteI had *heaps* of issues with the Sync and network timeout issues. Had the same problem and fixed it by doing the following in order:
1. disable internet proxies (if you must have proxies, add sync.foxmarks.com to the No Proxies list)
2. save bookmarks.html somewhere as a backup
3. delete all bookmarks, including toolbar folder
4. delete all bookmarks at my.foxmarks.com
5. uninstall foxmarks from firefox
6. import bookmarks.html back into firefox
7. install foxmarks version 2.0.36, using the Run Setup Wizard (this step is important!)
8. Bob’s your uncle. Enjoy.
@Steve:
ReplyDeleteI've not had any problems with Foxmarks 2.0.36 on Linux (Ubuntu Gutsy).
It works fine in 32-bit(using `linux32`) as well as 64-bit mode.
You may try backing up your bookmarks and forcing a sync either to or from foxmarks, then restore the backup and try syncing normally. Or you can try doing as Jason B suggested.
Since I've not had any problems syncing I can't say which will work(if any), but it's a good place to start. If all else fails you can contact support. Good luck. ^.^
Back Up First!
ReplyDeleteThe new version lost all my book marks(Couldn't find them on their web site either!). However I was able to get my book marks back reverting to the older version. Here is the link to get the older version - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/2410
Having said that the new version looks cool and I guess I'll upgrade after all, now that I have backed up my bookmarks.
Yorushk!
Hi.
ReplyDeleteJust a question: My version is 2.0.34 but if I check for updates, it can't find it. Why?
This is not a problem, my bookmarks sync is ok (99%)
Why does FoxMarks 2.0 always, always, always say it's busy on my XP systems BUT I can immediately upload or download using my OS X computer?
ReplyDeleteSince the update, I have only been able to update my XP machines ONCE.
It's gotta be more than a busy server.
I have not been able to reliably sync bookmarks for my work and home XP systems for a few days now unfortunately. The application either says foxmarks busy or the server is not available. I've updated all my installs to the latest or 2.0.34.
ReplyDeleteFor two days in a row, I have not been able to finish my setup of Foxmarks on one computer. I get a message "Foxmarks is busy".
ReplyDeleteOn the other computer, the second day (today 01/04/08) I also get a "server down".
I have had a few attempts at running 2.0.34 without success so for the moment I'm going to stick with 1.0.1 on all of my OS's and use the data in it's "old" format on the database.
ReplyDeleteI triple boot with XP, Vista and Mandriva 2008.0 Powerpack. In addition I use VMWare in WinXP and try out other OS's so I have a lot of stuff that makes use of Foxmarks. I am a strong proponent of Firefox and avoid IE like the plague.
It's a great shame that things have gone the way that they have with such a useful addon but I'm sure that in time it will all be sorted out.
This is a fantastic Firefox addon and as far as I know there is nothing else that compares with it. I appreciate the work that has gone into trying to solve the problems over the last month or so and wish the team every success for the future. I can also understand the amount of traffic that the server has had to contend with so I think I'll just sit and wait as my bookmarks are still intact and accessible with 1.0.1 from about 10 or 12 OS's and individual copies of Firefox.
Btw for anyone deeply concerned it's very easy to take a copy of your bookmarks and place it somewhere in your file system. From Firefox it's simply:
Bookmarks => Organize Bookmarks => File => Export => Then just select a location and click on Save.
Then.... If you lose your Foxmarks copy you can import this file back into one of your OS's Firefox browsers and redistribute it to your other OS's.
If you have had problems then I hope I have helped you - also - if you found this an amazingly simplistic approach then don't bother to contact me. I am just trying to help those that don't quite know what to do.
Have upgraded to 2.0.36, still having problems. Manual sync works most times. Automatic sync works probably 1 out every 3 attempts.
ReplyDeleteAs many have said, this is a great product, but these recent woes have really sullied the reputation of Foxmarks.
The manual sync worked on the first computer but the next one times out when trying to merge files. Using this newest version on both with Firefox 2.x
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThe autosync fails all the time - at least I can see the error mark all the time.
It just happened to started my browser, the autosync failed, then I did manual sync and it is finished without any error.
Getting better but far from the old version yet.
Gentlemen at Firefox. Version 2.0.3x is a very large disaster.
ReplyDeleteI have tried, repeatedly, to use this program and consistently had problems.
In particular, my laptop (running Vista Business) is crippled by Foxmarks. It affects my browsers and the internet stalls out, eventually making it impossible to get online. After removing the add-on, I have to clear all browser data in both Firefox and IE, then restart five or six times before the problem is corrected.
I've tried re-installing the add-on a couple times over the past month, always with the same results. I won't let you waste anymore of my time. I've gone back to 1.0.1, which has always worked fine for me, and you should go back to the computer lab for some basic courses.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
ReplyDeleteMy Foxmarks page has gone entirely kaput; its refusing to load in my browser. I tried IE, Firefox and Opera but it keeps stalling everytime I login. The same goes for the add-on (browser freezes everytime the sync dialog box shows).
Is there a workaround for this bug? I feel like throwing a sledgehammer at my comp now.
@yetson: That's very strange--does the Error Console in Firefox say anything useful? It sounds like maybe your internet connection may be blocking access to one of the URLs the page has to download.
ReplyDelete@everyone else who reported problems: If you're still seeing issues, please check out our FAQ and send us email if that doesn't solve your problems. The migration FAQ is here:

Thanks!
