We just released Foxmarks 2.0.43 on the Firefox Add-ons site (AMO). This version is identical to Foxmarks 2.0.42 with the sole exception of incorporating some usability improvements in the Setup Wizard. We recommend that all users upgrade to this new version, especially if you are running version 2.0.41 or earlier.
General comments can be posted here; if you have a specific problem or question that requires a response, please write to support instead.
Has multi browser support ever cross the developers minds? Just curious
ReplyDeleteI hope it didn't. :)
ReplyDeleteMulti-browser support means more complexity and different solutions for different browsers. Let's do it only for Firefox and do it great!
I second that multi-bowser support. Nevertheless, the current solution is great work as is!!
ReplyDeleteStill no support for FF 3.0? :(
ReplyDeleteDoes what it says, keeps my bookmarks up to date across the many computers i use. Any minor problems can be avoided with some common sense. ie as with any new extension back up first. I have no sync issues or missing data issues.
ReplyDeleteAlso agree with multi browser support (especially Safari). I use Firefox at work, but I like Safari at home (it's faster than FF)...
ReplyDeleteI'll second the support of FF 3.0 beta support. The only reason I havn't yet upgraded to it!
ReplyDeleteCould have sworn I read a message from someone that said "This is great," or something like that... x.x
ReplyDeleteGreat! The sync function work perfectly with this version. I experienced the 2.0.41 did not sync problem in Simplified Chinese version. And I'm very glad to see 2.0.43 works!
ReplyDeletePlease am having FF 3.0 support soon, I kiss you!
ReplyDelete@Nobu: That was comment spam that had gotten past our filter, though the five other similar comments across three separate blog posts were caught.
ReplyDeleteFirst,
ReplyDeleteHey, Foxmarks is great, many thanks for it. (I'm using my own FTP server.)
But...
Version 1
It was great, and caused no problems, nothing. I installed it, and it worked perfectly (on my own FTP)
Version 2
-- Installation (upgrade) took hours.
It wouldn't sync, kept getting locked up. I tried a WebDAV server which was even worse. Uninstalled, re-installed. Tried the logging. Tried new file names. Finally, not sure what worked, but I got it working.
-- my new bookmarks randomly disappeared
Did you add a check for DST or something?
(I add a BM on one machine, sync, all good,
sync another machine, all good,
sync another machine, all good,
go away and come back in a couple hours, new BM is gone from all machines.
It happened dozens of times, I think the cause was one machine was ticked for DST. Again, not sure what worked, but it seems to be fixed.
-- CPU goes up to 100% and I can't use the machine
Usually it happens about every hour, but in some cases, every 5(?) minutes. I had to turn off automatic updates and remember to manually sync.
-- upon shutting down Firefox it ALWAYS says I have un-synced bookmarks, even if I don't.
-- favicons are now showing up
nice, but if that's causing the high CPU, it's not worth it.
Comments
-- is there a way to lower the process priority or something, so I can still use the machine while it's syncing?
-- is there a way to change the sync frequency, like maybe every 4 hours, or (even better) only after X minutes of inactivity?
-- Thanks again, it's great, but there are some rough spots in v2.
@ducati: What version of Foxmarks are you using? Most of the problems you mention were addressed by time 2.0.43 rolled around, I thought. Regarding your questions:
ReplyDelete- There's no way to lower process priority unless you lower it for Firefox overall. (That I know of, at least.)
- Sync frequency isn't presently configurable.
Ahh. Ok.
ReplyDeleteFoxmarks is still working for me. Every once in a while it has trouble syncing, but not often... probably less than once a day.
Haven't lost a bookmark due to spontaneous disappearance yet. ^.^
thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm on 2.0.43, as of today.
> There’s no way to lower process priority
Okay, I'll stick to manual sync'ing then.
I just tried the shutdown sync issue again. It still happens. Maybe I don't understand what it's doing. Does it need to sync at least once per Firefox session so as to not ask upon shutdown? (I assumed it was implying that I had made changes to my local bookmarks, which I had not.)
Why is there such a CPU load in v2?
Actually, how hard is it to go back to v1?
thanks
I have to admit, it's pretty nice to have the favicons sync though. I hope that's not what's loading the CPU.
ReplyDeleteThanks to the Foxmarks team.
Just to add my praise... Foxmarks is one of the best programs I have on my PC in terms of actual usefulness and I couldn't live without it now.
ReplyDeletefoxmarks is on top of my usefull tools !
ReplyDeletei'm traveling a lot and what would i do w/o it.
thumbs up
tom
@ducati: Favicon synchronization is likely one of the contributors to the CPU usage when using your own server, since it's more data the extension has to process during synchronization. Feel free to turn that off in the extension and see if that helps. (Note that using the Foxmarks server gets better performance in this respect.)
ReplyDeleteThe sync-on-shutdown is likely caused by another extension updating your bookmarks--if you don't see the "needs an update" icon before getting sync-on-shutdown, though, that would be behavior we haven't seen before.
Using a DAV server might get you better performance, since that allows the extension to just check whether any server updates have happened; with an FTP server, it has to go through the entire file looking for diffs.
Be sure to consult and update http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Using_Your_Own_Server as appropriate--we're always happy to get more user reports on that page!
i hope it'll multi browser supported.
ReplyDeletethx if Foxmarks Teams want to approve my wish.
Can I join the herd asking for FF3 support? Are we likely to get this while it's still in beta?
ReplyDeleteI'm on the devel version of newest Ubuntu Linux (8.04). Now we have FF 3 as default but unable to use Foxmarks any more :(
ReplyDeleteIt's very useful, yes, but has one REALLY annoying feature: the upgrade prompt. Why? Whyyyyy??? Firefox has a built-in reminder that is not so in-your-face.
ReplyDelete@eric -- thanks. So there is hope for the CPU thing? Good. I'm not sure what you mean though ...
ReplyDelete> Feel free to turn that off in the extension
> and see if that helps.
Where do I do this? I see only a 'Foxmarks Settings' under 'Options'.
how do I turn of favicons?
ReplyDeletehi, this ist the best addons. only Please FF3 support.
ReplyDeletethx
Great tool... I just need it to work on FF3!!!
ReplyDelete@rs:
ReplyDeleteYeah, but the Firefox one(For me at least) only shows up when I first start Firefox and in a way that is about as "in your face" as with Foxmarks. I know there's a notification somewhere while Firefox is running, but I don't notice it while I'm browsing and so I don't usually update until I start Firefox the next time.
That said, I don't believe the update notification is necessary in Foxmarks either, since Firefox does indeed have that functionality built in. Not so much because it's jumps out at you whenever there's an update, but more because it's functionality is implemented twice as it is now and unnecessary. Besides that, it looks like just a script to open the addons window and "click" the Foxmarks plugin then it's update button. Just pointing out the obviousness of it. ^.^
@ducati: Sorry for the trouble you had posting; looks like our spam filter was bored or something. Also, my apologies for not providing more details on the favicon synchronization disabling--check out http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Disabling_Favicon_Sync for more information on that, including the caveats mentioned therein.
ReplyDelete@Firefox 3 groupies: Soon, very soon! We have a version now that sets every bookmark to http://www.webhamster.com/, but we figure you probably want something a little closer to what the Firefox 2 version does...
turning off the favicons helped a lot. It cut the 100% CPU time way down.
ReplyDeletethank you
Actually, to be clearer -- with the favicons 'off', the time the CPU spends at 100% is down from 20 - 30 seconds to 5 - 10 seconds, and the total sync time is down from around 30 - 45 seconds to around 15 - 20.
ReplyDeleteSince during the time the CPU is at 100% the PC is unusable, this is a massive improvement -- going from 25 to 7 seconds. Thanks Eric. I can turn 'automatic' back on.
ducati
Opera as a second browser wouldn't hurt either....
ReplyDeleteWe need Firefox 3.0 support. I have already moved to Firefox 3.0 Beta 3 (an rc version and will move to the final beta 3 once it is released) and Foxmarks is the only add-on I miss and that is not availiable for FF3.
ReplyDeleteGreat Add-on!
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible to sync also the search-engines? That would be great! Or does someone know an add-on that do this?
> to sync also the search-engines?
ReplyDeletewhat does that mean?
I have 3 systems I use regularly, each with slightly different versions of Firefox, and Foxmarks keeps my hundreds of bookmarks perfectly organized, even including maintaining alphabetic sorting. I have tried a couple of other bookmark synchronizers and Foxmarks not only works the best, but is the easiest. Thanks for all of your efforts!
ReplyDeleteRich
Another FF3 groupie asking for support here. Other than that, I'm just too please with all your work!
ReplyDeleteJust another vote for some FF3 support. I love the product and use it with about 5 systems. Are there any FF3 plans? Haven't really seen anything posted about if/when it will ever happen.
ReplyDeleteFoxmarks download link not working at FF. Says something about a missing command argument. Please drop me a not when fixed.
ReplyDeletethx!
@Bill: Works fine for me; can you send along the full text of the error message you're encountering? You might also have some luck consulting this page on the Mozilla website:
ReplyDeletehttp://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox
Dumb Questions: Do I install Foxmarks on each of the computers I want to synchronize, or only one.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the message "proxy configuration error" mean in the middle of the setup of foxmarks, and how do I fix it?
Would it be possible to add the ability to copy the FireFox bookmarks to a folder in the WinXP Start menu? Or is there another add-on somewhere designed to do that?
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I like better about IE than FireFox is that with IE I can use WinXP's Favorites menu to go directly to the first website I want without starting up the browser and going to a homepage first.
Tack another one on wishing for FF 3 support. This is one of the most useful extensions ever!
ReplyDeleteChecking back daily for Firefox 3 support... What a great add-on..
ReplyDelete*very_sad* When FF3 support will be available ???? :((((
ReplyDeletesad. still no update on ff3 support. weave 0.1.16 is already out, though it has a few serious problems now. i do wish foxmarks can get updated soon. i've used it for long, and don't want to give it up too soon.
ReplyDelete@ikoniclast: You need to install it on all the computers you want synchronized. The proxy error is likely caused by a proxy misconfiguration; you can get around that by following the instructions here:
ReplyDeletehttp://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Disabling_a_Proxy_Server
@Tim Deaton: I have no idea how to link Firefox bookmarks to the Start menu in XP. Anyone else know?
Hey - GREAT add-on. I have come to depend on it. I am a Mac user, and I recently installed FF3 beta - it is a LOT better than the 2.x release for Mac users.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see an expedited version of Foxmarks for FF3. I'd be happy to work with a beta version, and to submit bugs if needed.
Thanks,
----------------S
I'm also putting in a bump for FF3 and I'd also be happy to test with the Beta and send in any bugs on either my XP Home SP2 laptop or my Vista Ultimate x64 desktop
ReplyDeleteYes we need support for FF3 ASAP please.
ReplyDeleteI just made a bunch of changes to my bookmarks, and all was fine. The changes showed up on at least one of the other machines. I went most of the day with the new bookmark arrangement.
ReplyDeleteOne machine was rebooted several times today. Now I just noticed all the bookmarks on all machines have reverted to the way they were this morning.
Can you shed some light on this random reverting? Actually, it worked out great because I was thinking I didn't like the new arrangement and was going to move them back. But it's still a little unsettling that this still happens now and then.
My PC clocks are all within a 30 seconds of each other.
One PC mysteriously rebooted during some heavy page loading today.
I'm using my own FTP server.
All 3 PC are running Firefox 2.0.0.12, and Foxmarks 2.0.43
I tried WedDAV and it was horribly slow.
I have favicons 'off' on all machines.
Like I said, today I'm glad it happened, but it still makes me nervous. Where would the old set of bookmarks even be coming from? Must be from one of the machines, right? The common sync file doesn't have versions or history, right? If it is from one of the machines, why is it not getting the time comparison right, and syncing the wrong way?
ducati, I am having the same issues that you are using the foxmarks server. I made the switch to google bookmarks until this gets fixed.
