As excitement builds over the imminent release of Firefox 3, so has the clamor from our users for a version of Foxmarks that supports Mozilla's new browser. We're happy to announce that we're now opening registration for interested testers for a new beta version of Foxmarks. This new version works with the latest beta of Firefox 3.
If you're interested in participating in the beta test, just head over to beta.foxmarks.com to register. We'll notify you when you can download, install, and start testing. Note that you'll need a Foxmarks account to register for the program.
Over the coming weeks, we'll be admitting people into the program in increasing numbers, starting off slowly to make sure that serious problems are discovered early and their impact is minimized. As we gain confidence that everything looks good, we'll be opening the doors wider. We expect that Foxmarks will be ready for general release well in advance of the Firefox 3 final release.
We really appreciate the enthusiasm that so many of you have expressed and are delighted to be able to work with you to produce a first-rate synchronization product for Firefox 3.
Update: March 4, 2008: It's on! This evening, we admitted the first batch of beta testers. Interest in the beta test program has so greatly exceeded our expectations that we've only been able to admit the first 5% of volunteers. If you haven't received your invitation yet, please be patient: it's coming soon.
Awesome, can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI'd test myself, but I'm a little wary, so I'll wait a while(or until it's released to public) before trying it out. Believe it or not, I'm more worried about losing my bookmarks than most of the stuff on my hard drive. XD
(Currently running Ubuntu 8.04 [In development])
Great!
ReplyDeleteSweet! I knew there was a reason I check this site compulsively every day.
ReplyDelete[...] http://blog.foxmarks.com/?p=118 [...]
ReplyDeleteI've been using Foxmarks for quite a while now and the only wish I have is that you could synch IE as easily as Firefox. I use it on all the VMs I have as well as the PCs and notebooks I use.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to participate in the beta, but maybe you could confirm whether it will interoperate with the old version, or would I have to upgrade them all?
Great!
ReplyDeleteI'm in.
Definitely! I'm in too! Man, I'll beta-test this thing's a** off!
ReplyDeleteI register myself as beta tester.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible an estimate start date?
This is SO good. I could not upgrade to FF3 yet because of Foxmarks. Of course I'll help you guys out.
ReplyDeleteThis is the only thing keeping me from migrating to FF3. I realize that you can only accommodate so many beta users on your servers, but could you at least put the .xpi up for download for those users that, like myself, prefer to use foxmarks with their own private FTP servers?
ReplyDeleteI cant wait to try the new asci tests :)
ReplyDeleteI think you should pick me because i have maked that all my friends use FF 2 ;)
Thanks for taking FF further.
Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteHow does Foxmarks sync the Places data? Can you give us some technical information?
ReplyDeleteWOW! Why did I just find out about this today? Thanks guys for doing this!
ReplyDeleteI thought I'd responded very quickly .... hopefully this will open up to more soon!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it!
I have been using firefox 3 for 30 days. I like foxmarks plugin,I want to test it.
ReplyDeleteWaiting impatiently...
ReplyDeletePlease admit a next batch! :p
@PhilH: Interoperability with earlier releases of Foxmarks version 2 is indeed a concern we have, thus why we're doing limited beta testing.
ReplyDeletePlease send it to me.Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping that translators would be able to participate in the first round :)
ReplyDeleteGuess I will have to wait a little.
Can you give us some feedback on how the beta e going??
ReplyDeleteAnd also I'd like to know when (or at which stage of the development) will more testers be admited?
This extension is now the sole reason why I keep using Firefox 2.0
@petersaints:
ReplyDeleteThe beta test is going terribly -- we're not finding enough bugs!
We just admitted the third wave of testers, so now the first 20% of the volunteer pool has been admitted. We'll keep increasing the rate of admissions until we find some meaty bugs to fix.
If you haven't received your invitation yet, please hang in there. If things keep up as they're going now (which of course they may not), everyone who has registered will receive an invitation by the end of next week.
@ Todd
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your reply. I'll keep waiting ;) And good luck squeezing the nasty bugs.
Thanks for the update Todd. I registered earlier in the week. One question, will this keep our Firefox 2 and 3 bookmarks in sync, or is it using a separate server only for use with FF3? Thanks again.
ReplyDelete@Leland:
ReplyDeleteYes, Foxmarks will keep Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 bookmarks in sync. Both clients talk to the same server.
@Todd (or any other person capable of answering this...)
ReplyDeleteWhat version of Firefox do you recommend for testing Foxmarks for Firefox 3.0 (Firefox 3.0 Beta 2, or soon Beta 4, or do you prefer us to test it on the Nightly builds?)
I'm just questioning this in case I get an invitation ;)
I'm using Foxmarks on FF2 with a webdav server. If you want more coverage on that portion of the code, you can add me on to the beta on FF3. Foxmarks is one of the main reasons I haven't moved over to FF3 :)
ReplyDeleteJust signed up for the beta, I've been using foxmarks for a while now and would love the support in firefox 3. Firefox 3 is just so much better, its kind of a pain having to sync with ff2 before I install ff3 at this point. Thanks for the good work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with those who have said here how important their bookmarks are and how vital a role Foxmarks plays in keeping their systems running. Foxmarks has saved my butt more than once. Can't recommend it too much.
ReplyDeleteNow, if we just had a similar program for Thunderbird.
I have been using the beta version of foxmarks on the Nightly builds of FF 3.0 with no problems so far.
ReplyDeleteJust Info
I'm still waiting for an invite :P
ReplyDeleteBut is good to hear that Foxmarks is doing great with the Nightlies
BTW what's the current status of beta invitation waves?
Please invite me to the beta 3 test. I love this browser.
ReplyDeletePlease invitie me! I update Firefox 3 trunk builds every day!
ReplyDeleteRunning minefield nightlies, tired of Weave.
ReplyDeleteUsed foxmarks constantly in fx 2.
Would really, really like access to a beta (hey it can't be more beta than weave can it?)
Yeah Weave is ALPHA...
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for an invite ;)
Running Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 but I'm thinking to move to Nightlies until final Firefox 3.0 (or until they start to rollout very buggy).
I M WAITING FOR THE ERESPONSE
ReplyDeleteHey for what it's worth the nightlies are fantastic...
ReplyDeleteA great review. Foxmarks is already here
ReplyDeleteI'm currently testing Ubuntu Linux v 8.04 (development) and Firefox 3 and look forward to having Foxmarks available. I have three networked computers, some with both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2 systems.
ReplyDeleteRunning foxmarks on a combination of leopard, tiger and XP, would love to get access to the Firefox 3 foxmarking goodness!
ReplyDelete好极了,支持你
ReplyDeleteI am also still waiting for a response. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCool, can't wait. hope it goes well
ReplyDelete[...] source [Foxmarks Blog] [...]
ReplyDeleteI have already to sign up the beta tester.
ReplyDeleteBut I have no get the email.
Why ?
i'm in.
ReplyDeleteCurrently running Ubuntu 8 on my beta laptop and with Firefox 3 beta 5. I would like to get Foxmarks for it so I can sync my bookmarks. I know that only a beta version is available, but this is my trashtop that I test a lot on.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi
ReplyDeleteWhen will a release be made available? Struggling to get my bookmarks with firefox 3b5 :(
Do you have to be part of the approved beta testing program to get a "preview" copy?
Cheers
Baz
can't get 2.0.44.17 to download - help?
ReplyDeleteI wont it!!! Where I can get it?
ReplyDelete@Chad: Updated your post to make it a little more family-friendly. We're in a closed beta right now because Mozilla is still hunting down one last blocker crash in the browser that affects the Foxmarks extension. We're letting people in on a regular basis, though, so if you've signed up, you should be getting a notification email relatively soon.
ReplyDeleteI wish to test it on firefox 3 too.
ReplyDeleteHow can I do, the beta is close ...
Signed
ReplyDeleteLooking Forward to this.
Ok, sorry for being mean and rude. I posted that in the heat of the moment. Thanks for your hard work. I've downgraded to Firefox 2 for now.
ReplyDelete@Chad Johnson: Thanks, it's appreciated. We're in the process of admitting another wave right now, so I hope you'd signed up!
ReplyDeleteeric, any ETA on a final release? Are you wainting till June for Firefox 3 final release, or do you think it'll be safe for release before that date?
ReplyDeleteI can live without it till June, but both Fedora and Ubuntu are releasing soon (Ubuntu 8.04 is tomorrow) and lots of people will just see that their distribution trashed Foxmarks (both distribution should ship 3.0 as the default web browser).
@t3g: We expect to be ready before the Firefox 3 final release, but we have no definite release date yet. We'll definitely announce it on the blog as soon as we do, though!
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind, though, that the line to get into the beta program isn't long at all--it's not an insurmountable challenge to get beta access.
please make the beta at least available
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteI'd like to become beta tester.. just upgraded to ubuntu 8.04 and it has FF 3.0 beta 5 by default.. and i liked foxmarks very much with 2.0..
Please let people use the beta, signed up, and waiting to make my FF3 beta usable,,,
ReplyDeleteLike every other Foxmarks user who upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04, I've had Firefox 3 beta thrust upon me.
ReplyDeleteIt's either update Foxmarks, or downgrade Firefox.
Let this puppy loose! Thanks.
Like many other just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 I miss this add-on, foxmark is my best add-on
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteCould you please throw out a beta version for people who running their own server? I'm kind of lost without your add-on ;-)
Cheers
Please make FOXMARKS Beta available as soon as possible...
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to get my hands of Foxmarks for Firefox 3. Foxmarks is awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteJust upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and I miss the best add-on: Foxmarks!
ReplyDeletehurry! please release the beta to the public!
ReplyDeleteSo because UBUNTU 8.04 ships with FF3 and Foxmarks does not support FF3 I have no access to my bookmarks. Can you create an export feature so I can have my bookmarks that are being held hostage while you figure out when you want to release a version for FF3?
ReplyDeleteCome on, why don't you want to release the beta version? What do you have to lose? Everybody knows that a beta version is not 100% stable, but we don't mind. Basically, every user of a beta version is a beta tester and can provide feedback.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, foxmarks is great and we would really, really appreciate a released version which is compatible with FF3 beta 5.
Hey chaps, just upgraded my asus eeepc to hardy heron, and I'm missing foxmarks badly!
ReplyDeletePlease release the beta version for FF3 I won't blame you if I lose my bookmarks - promise!
Actually scratch that. I've just realised it's easy to uninstall firefox 3 and install firefox 2 from synaptic.
ReplyDeleteTake your time, chaps and release it when it's ready - thanks for a great plugin!
Hi
ReplyDeleteI have a bit of a problem with the limitation of beta testers. I have upgraded my Ubuntu Linux to 8.04 which includes the Firefox 3.05b browser and thus the Foxmarks plugin does not work.
Couldn't you still allow us Ubuntu users to get the plugin and not have to send feedback. Just so it works.
Pretty please.
I'm an Ubuntu user, not yet upgraded (curse dialup!).
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the release, but don't feel like going beta for this...
even though I'm often using beta Firefox away from home.
It's not your fault the Ubuntu developers (maybe me eventually) don't want to delay for the official Firefox 3 release, as you appear to be doing with the closed beta. But PLEASE HURRY! I miss Foxmarks... :'(
@o2bfishn: Did you enable 3rd-party cookies as it specifies at the "Problems installing?" link at http://beta.foxmarks.com/program/firefox3?
ReplyDeleteI would like to beta test, but I run foxmarks off my personal server. Please let me know when you open testing up for such users, and I will test it.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
@=Fen: There's no requirement to use the Foxmarks server for this beta test. We already have several people using the beta client on their own servers.
ReplyDelete[...] Firefox addons I can’t live without Ubuntu Hardy comes loaded with Firefox 3 beta 5. This new version throws most of the addons that I was using on Firefox 2 out the window. The few that do work are great. One excellent one that I’ve added right away is Foxmarks. It allows me to recover all my bookmarks from the last installation and it updates the bookmarks each time I exit. I can also grab those bookmarks from any other computer that has Firefox installed. Please note that at present, Foxmarks is only in beta testing for Firefox 3 and you’ll need to sign up on their site to be included in the testing. [...]
ReplyDeleteThank you
ReplyDeleteI just install complete on FireFox 3 beta 5 (ubuntu hardy)
I think it good :)
[...] Ici [...]
ReplyDeleteBTW, for your next beta, try using the feedback tool at http://www.custfeedback.com I used it for a couple of other betas and it worked pretty well.
