Foxmarks for Firefox 3 Beta Test: The Home Stretch

Foxmarks continues to perform well in beta test. We've fixed a few more bugs and are now again admitting into the program everyone who has volunteered to test. If you see something that doesn't look right and isn't already on our list of known issues, please let us know about it.

Update: The beta program is now an open beta. Go to the beta site to download the beta software immediately.

  2. I'm interested in helping test the new version if you are still looking for people. I am on 2 macs at home, one with Parallels and use it and another PC at work. All use foxmarks.

thanks and hope I can help!!

  3. Thanks for opening up the beta again! I love Firefox 3 but it just wasn't the same without Foxmarks. Keep up the great work!

  7. I'd very much like to test.

  8. I'm game to try as well. I'm having to switch between versions at work (2.x xp) and at home (3b xp) and laptop (2.x osx--will upgrade to 3b) which may give you a decent test case.

  13. Many people are already upgrading to Firefox 3 Beta 5. I've tested it for a week with different websites and it hasn't yet broken once. The point here is you should do no delay in releasing Foxmarks extension for FF3. I've seen my couple of friends already moving to either del.icio.us or Google Bookmarks. They are big fish and once a user sticks to them then they don't turn back. So, include more Foxmarks beta testers and release it ASAP.

  14. [...] 让Del.icio.us书签服务和Firefox整合。现在提供的是一个alpha版本,需要加入yahoo的相应group,才能下载使用。另外,如果你不用Del.icio.us的话,可以用Foxmarks来在不同电脑之间同步书签,也是有针对FF3的版本,但是需要注册才能得到。 [...]

  15. I can't believe you don't have Foxmarks for Firefox 3 yet! It's such a great little program, one that's been needed for years, and you're dragging your feet on releasing a version that works with its main browser, the browser that's in its 5th iteration of its beta! Time to gt off the pot, amigos! Keeping your clientele is important, don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Nancy Krieg:

Thanks for your kind words of support as well as your (I assume) good-natured chiding.

The situation is hardly one of feet-dragging -- we're as anxious as you to get the Firefox 3-compatible version of Foxmarks out the door. Unfortunately, there are still some lingering obstacles, most notably the fact that Firefox 3 crashes during sync for some users.

We're actively working with the Mozilla developers to resolve this (primarily by connecting them with Foxmarks users who can reproduce the crash), but the problem is within Firefox itself and has thus far proven elusive. It will get fixed -- and it's considered a blocking bug by Mozilla, meaning that Firefox 3 won't ship until it is resolved.

Finally, I see that you have joined the beta program, which is your fastest path to gaining access. Barring the unforeseen, we'll be admitting another batch of users this week.

    Thanks for your patience.

  18. I'm not sure if I should report this as a bug or what. I got my email today to join the beta testing program, but foxmarks won't install. I get the message "Firefox could not install the file at:... because: not a valid install package - 207" I'm running on Mac 10.5.2 Firefox 3.0b5...

    Hope this isn't a bug!

  19. Hello,
I'm Foxmark user since long time (Great extension!).
I have some problem to use Foxmarks on FF3beta 5.
I'd like to install the beta version for FF3 because actually I just moved to Ubunt 8.04 which has FF3 already.
Please, could you help me to get the Foxmark beta version?
    Thank you in advance

  20. Hi,

just got my invite for the beta, thanks. I'm running FF 1.5.0.12 on my PC (still -- never change a running system) with the current stable version of Foxmarks. And I have a parallel installation of FF3b5 (portable edition, since it doesn't mess with my FF 1.5 profile and add-ons) for testing's sake.

The wiki only mentions FF2. So now I'm hesitant to install the Foxmarks beta because I don't want to mess up my bookmarks in FF1.5 by using Foxmarks beta in FF3b5.

    Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm missing Foxmarks now that I've migrated to FF3b5 so therefore I'd be pleased to receive an invitation for the Foxmarks beta.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @ignorant: We've not tested on Firefox 1.5 at all, but that's the point of a beta test, no? =)

Give it a spin and let us know how it goes!

  23. @ignorant:

A follow-up for eric: As always, don't forget to backup your bookmarks. ; )

  24. Hi - me too please! Happy to share what I find out using foxmarks on FF3.0b5 - (on Ubuntu 8.04 beta, running on a Lenovo 3000 N200) already been using foxmarks on other PCs and laptops and try to talk friends and colleagues into it as well!

Great stuff - keep at it :-)

  25. May I test. I am going crazy without my Foxmark syncing with work.

  26. Hi

Any chance you could include me as a beta tester, as the next version of Ubuntu Linux is released in the next few days and I need to get My installation of Firefox 3 Beta synced with my installation of Firefox two so that when I upgrade my ubuntu I can forget Firefox 2 and also be protected in case anthing go's amiss during the upgrade.

Thanks for your time in this matter once again and like everyone else, thanks for bringing us this fantastic program. Can't wait to try the new version.

    Kind Regards - David Nemo

  27. Can I please be added as a beta tester? I too am going crazy manually syncing my bookmarks.

  28. I would love to test this release as well. I am on Hardy RC AMD64 right now, so FF3b5.

  29. Regarding the '...not a valid install...' which I also have on FF3b5
(on Vista64, as opposed to the Mac user who posted earlier)

Is there no other workaround other than making another profile?
Is there no distribution of the beta xpi file to accepted members?

I used Foxmarks 1 with my FTP server until FF3 became stable and took over full-time browser duties. Weave is doing the job now that Foxmarks 1 used to, but without a private server of course.

I would love to find out how much improved Foxmarks is since the version 2 launch which all but scared me off version 2 forever. In particular, I would like to try it with WebDAV on an Ubuntu server.

Asking me to recreate my profile when everything else is working and installing just fine is, frankly, a step in the wrong direction. I have no intention of ditching an otherwise perfectly good profile.

So what is this Firefox bug?
What else has it affected besides your installer?

I would try this out if I didn't have to jump through hoops to do it.

    Thanks for any feedback.

  30. Hi,

I had the same ‘…not a valid install…’ problem with all my existing Firefox profiles, on Windows XP, Vista and Linux.
The workaround I used is temporarily moving away my prefs.js file.

So what I did is the following:
    - close Firefox and move the prefs.js file in your profile to another directory
    - start Firefox, install the Foxmarks beta and close Firefox again
    - move back prefs.js and start Firefox

Using this method I was able to install the Foxmarks beta in all my existing Firefox profiles. And so far it seems to work great with WebDAV on my Gentoo server :)

  31. Thank you Bart, and Todd, very much!

I had a feeling if I held my breath a little longer someone might stumble on a workaround with more 'transient' alterations than a new profile. I looked at the code links from Todd, but alas it's far beyond me.

I have to split to see some clients but will try this in a few hours.

    Cheers!

  32. Follow-Up:

First, the prefs.js workaround Bart suggested works beautifully!
(allowed me to install on FF3b5 on both Vista64 and XPProSP2)

Second, performance syncing to my local WebDAV server is great!

Third, after some initial hiccups, I have stable sync between my FF2.14 on Ubuntu 7.10/FF3b5 on Vista64/FF3b5 on WinXPProSP2 !

I did however, experience a situation where I was getting 'Forbidden' on 2 of the 3 machines after successfully connecting/uploading from each. It's unclear to me if the timeout I then added to the DAVLock config is what resolved it, but regardless I had to upload a fresh file (new name each time) a few times before I could get all 3 machines to sync happily without generating any 'Forbidden' errors.

Thanks for the assistance and I look forward to testing this further.

  33. Just upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu, and found that it's also installed the FF3 beta - any news on when FoxMarks for FF3 will be released? I signed up for the beta programme, but obviously I have no idea how far back in the queue I am :)

  34. I just downloaded Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and had to remove Foxmarks. Any idea how I can get a beta or when the next compatible version will be released. BTW.. I rank Foxmarks as the most usefull addon I use.. thanks for a great tool... Malc

  35. I have a new PC just for doing Linux experiments. SO, Foxmarks for Firefox3 would fit right in. Let me know if you want me to crash the system on your behalf.

    Currently it's running Xubuntu 8.04

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why isn't this beta version available for public?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi,

    I'm using Foxmarks.

I have just upgradded to Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop.

It comes with Firefox 3 beta by default.

When do you plan to release foxmarks for this version ?

I will be needing synchronisation again very soon, and I have been happy with foxmarks to date.

However, I think that if I put the time in move to another plugin, it's unlikely I would bother the effort to come back to foxmarks.

    Cheers

  38. I'm very happy to advice you that I have just synching FF3b5 with all my bookmarks using Foxmarks (2.0.44.17) on Windows Vista.

Since now all time that I trying to synch it under FF3 it always crashes, and so I have never be able to do a right synch using my old foxmarks account.

To synch it I've used this workaround:

    1) create a new Foxmarks account
    2) export all bookmark from FF2 and import it under FF3b5
    3) sync FF3 using new account
    4) sync FF2 using new account
    5) EOF

  39. @Vasco:

If you registered for the beta program at the original time of this posting (April 4), you have already been admitted. If you didn't get the email we sent you it's likely that your spam filter ate it.

Regardless, as we've said before, you can go to http://beta.foxmarks.com/ to check your status.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Vasco:

They meant everyone who had already registered for the beta had been admitted. If you hadn't registered at the time that was posted(like me) you will have to wait a little while. Otherwise, if you had registered before that post(unlike me), you should have already been admitted(as Todd has said above).

  41. @Todd and Nobu

Thanks for the clarification. I did sign up after the post.

I would also like to add my name to the list of people asking for a timetable (but only if that doesn't help the terrorists) for a public release.

  43. I did sign up to Beta Test. When I log in it still says there's a limited number of slots (contrary to your post). When will the "Beta Test" page be updated to allow me to install?

  44. Sorry: It freezes FF3, NOT FF2.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Foxmarks freezes Firefox every time it starts..
It starts then after 15-20 seconds it freezes, after a little bit of seconds it works again.. I hope you'll solve this issue.
I tried to clean my bookmarks, to import from FF2.. But i have same issues.. Maybe i have to try a new clean profile? :(

  50. Any idea when foxmarks 3 can be used with private servers?

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Daniel: The beta version allows own-server use. Give it a try!

  52. Hi.

I few weeks back I exchanged some emails with you guys about a (probably) Linux-specific bug where the "Unfiled Bookmarks" folder was not visible or accessible from the Bookmarks drop-down menu (it is displayed in the bookmarks sidebar)

Wondered if this was going to get fixed?

Apart from that, the beta has been great for me. Thanks!

  59. Where is the DONATE button?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @Chris: That error's caused by a conflict between add-on installation and the way "third party" cookies are handled. See http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Firefox3Beta for more details.

@anonomous: Aw, thanks for the offer! We don't have one yet, but may at some point in the future. Stay tuned!

  62. Same problem as Dave. FF3b8, Linux Mint, Foxmarks 2.0.4.20.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Did not mean to sound pushy :) You all are doing a great job.

Apparently my problem was either due to a) FF3b8 (now running FF3RC1, or b) running the Linux Mint edition of FF3. The problem is gone, and I am still using Foxmarks 2.0.44.20.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Any idea?

[2008-08-31 21:36:34] Synchronization failed. Error is (new Error("No solution converged after 1000 iterations", "chrome://foxmarks/content/foxmarks-core.js", 453))

  65. Whoops, looks like I've been overlooking a thread here about the "No solution" error message.

@kc: That problem usually means there's a circular reference in your bookmarks collection. That can often be fixed by creating a new Firefox profile as described here:

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile

Another option is to simply upload your bookmark collection to the Foxmarks server via Tools > Foxmarks > Settings, "Advanced", "Upload".
