Foxmarks for IE: Try our shiny new Alpha 2 version!

We're excited to announce a new Alpha version of Foxmarks for Internet Explorer! We released the first Alpha about two months ago, and since then have received a tremendous amount of valuable feedback from all of you. Thank you!

This new version includes several major bug fixes and feature improvements. Here are some of the most exciting ones:

  • Bookmark ordering: This new version will preserve the order of your bookmarks when you sync. We worked super hard to make this happen and would love lots of feedback on how this is working.

  • Sync Profiles support: Foxmarks for IE now supports Sync Profiles! Keep your private bookmarks at home and your work bookmarks in the office.

  • Better international support: Bookmarks stored in the "Links" folder will now correctly appear in your bookmark toolbar, even if you're using a non-English version of IE.

  • More stable: We also ironed out several other issues that you told us about including issues with syncing on shutdown, removing the mystery "(2)" that was appended to the end of bookmarks, and supporting long bookmark names.

This new version is now an open alpha, so any Foxmarks user can login and try it immediately. If you use Internet Explorer, please give it a spin and let us know what you think!

What's in our next release?

  • Play nice with Vista UAC: we still don't run very well when Vista User Account Control is turned on, but hope to address this in our next release.

  • Fix any bugs you find. We're especially interested in any problems non-English users may run into.

  4. Problem:
After installing the Foxmarks for IE7 I made the initial sync O.K.
But now when I try to sync I always see this message and no sync:

    "Debug Assertion Failed!

    Program C:\Programmer\Internet Explorer.exe File: C:\program files\microsoft visual studio 8\vc\include\list line: 990

    Expression: invalid operator

  5. Hey William,

We just released an update (version 0.8.65) that should fix this problem. Try downloading and installing again and let us know if you still see this problem.

    Cheers!

  6. I had the same problem as MikeC. I clicked on the download link above, got the disclaimer screen with the "SignUp" button, but clicking on it does nothing. Pop-up blocker is off.

  9. @MikeC, Sean and Ming: It appears the button we're using for the form isn't liked by Internet Explorer. We're working on a fix, but in the meantime you should be able to download the file using Firefox. Sorry for the trouble! We'll update here when the fix is deployed.

UPDATE: Should be fixed now; let us know if you have any further trouble downloading the new extension!

  10. I would love it if I could have a password on it... so I would have to login before I could see them. Just for security.

  11. I have Foxmarks for Firefox. If I get this version for Internet Explorer, will I be able to synchronize those on IE and those on Firefox? Is that a possibility?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Chris: I believe so.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Chris: Yep, it's intended to synchronize between IE and Firefox fairly seamlessly. Some stuff like Smart Bookmarks won't work under IE, but other than that it should work for you. Try it out!

  14. Man I have been telling everybody about your extension. It's awesome and I love it...I have only one problem. I started using Google's new web browser Chrome today. and I LOVE IT too...I hope you guys will release a compatible plug in!

    Thanks,
    Nathan

  15. I just installed the lasted Alpha for Foxmarks for IE. Very nice.

I merged my IE and Firefox favorites beforehand to be sure it was clean and then I backed up my IE favorites and then emptied the IE favorites folder. Installed Foxmarks for IE and Viola! Everything was back. Then I put all of my folders first. Then synced then re-synced FireFox and everything was perfect. I am impressed! Many Thanks.

  16. Just to concur with Nathan - PLEASE make a version from Chrome a priority - with Google behind it I think you'll find you'll very soon have more users between it and Firefox than for IE!

Please - it's the one killer ad-on I need for Chrome!

  17. Hey Guys,

When can foxmarks be available for Google Chrome? I been using Chrome now for 24 hours and I like it. I think, I will be using it from now on. Only thing I miss in Chrome is foxmarks.

I need foxmarks to sync my bookmarks.

    Please make it available soon.

  18. [...] Foxmarks has been syncing Firefox bookmarks across computers for almost two years, and now we’re expanding to sync bookmarks across browsers as well. We’ve just begun supporting Internet Explorer (try out the alpha version) and we hope to add Chrome and Safari to the list. [...]

  19. Perhaps foxmarks is already working in chrome . I just downloaded chrome and started up ...I signed in to foxmarks at startup , but I don't see a button on Chrome for Foxmarks . This shouldn't be much of a problem with open source . I mean Chrome is built on open source but I don't know about Foxmarks !

  20. Hi!
Congratulations for your work! It is a nice job... but i'd like to report a little problem.
I've three computers (2 with XP and 1 with Vista OS)In all of them i use Firefox and IE. In the computers than run XP the sychronization works fine (between Firefox and IE), but in the computer that runs Vista OS the IE bookmarks bar doesn't sync well. In fact the bookmarks bar appear empty!
As I said, in XP the IE bookmarks bar works fine, then i think that is a little problem with Vista that could be fixed easily.
A suggestion: don't you think that would be interesting to share folders of favorites between foxmarks users? For example: my wife is a foxmarks user too and i'd like that she can access to part of my favorites(folders) not in RSS format but in foxmarks format! These folders could be changed by both of us. What do you think about?
    Thank you very much

  21. The best thing that could happen, foxmarks multi-browser !

Now, there's my trouble. I use french IE and Firefox. in IE, if you switch between english and french, the keyname for the "link" bar changes. The directory is named links in english, and liens in french. Is it possible for you to detect what's the name of the "links toolbar" directory, and sync the firefox links toolbar with the good IE directory for the link ? That could be very appreciated ! I suppose there's a place in the directory where the link directory is stored... I think that in Vista, even if I have a french os and french IE, the directory used is "favorites\links". But in XP, it changes.

    Good job ! thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  22. answer to me: The key for the links directory is there:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName

Now in my french vista, the linksfoldername is not present. I suppose that if there is not key, the "links" is used by default. I'll have to verify on my XP at home, I am sure that I will get a "liens" value for the linksfoldername parameter. So it will be possible to you to sync the FF link bar with the good IE link directory !

  23. Downloaded and installed IE foxmarks. Synced and all is well.
I have sorted my bookmarks out in "organise bookmarks" in firefox. They are all mow in the bookmarks toolbar. My fav fav sites listed and then folders to drop down.
Now, when I go to sync IE, I get an unexpected error and nothing happens....

  24. @Manel, fredo and James: Please send your comments to our beta email address as mentioned at http://beta.foxmarks.com/ under the project page.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  25. @fredo: Yeah, we've got some problems detecting the Links folder name correctly in Windows Vista. It's something we plan to have fixed in the next major release. As a work around, it looks like you already found the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName registry location. If you set LinksFolderName to "Links" on your Vista machine we'll find that name and use it instead of the "Liens" name that we end up using instead.

@James: Your Foxmarks log file might have more information that can help us figure out what's going wrong. You can view the log file by clicking on the "Advanced..." button on the Foxmarks dialog and then clicking the "View Log File..." button. If you copy the last 20 lines or so and email it to the "Report Bugs" link on our product page ( http://beta.foxmarks.com/program/ie_alpha ) we'll try to figure out what's wrong.

@Manel: What language is your Windows Vista machine using? English? If not, you may be running into the same problem as fredo is. In Windows Vista we use the wrong folder name when creating the bookmarks bar folder, so IE can't find it and ends up displaying an empty folder instead.

  26. Is there a way to install this tool without administrator privileges for the current user only?

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Kay: Are you using Vista or XP? As for the current user, no we don't have great support for current user vs all users on the same machine. But it's something we plan to improve.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am using XP in this case.

  29. I'm not sure what caused this but all my bookmarks ended up sorted into alphabetical order when they landed in IE, which then went back up the chain and messed up my FireFox ones. GRRRRRRRR!!!!! I had to restore them from a backup in FF to get them back to my order. Anyone else seen this? Some setting in my IE that messed them up?

    ReplyDelete
  30. @MikeC: Are your bookmarks sorted a specific way(i.e.: Did you choose "Sort Alphabetically" in the context/right-click menu of your favorites menu)? I think you would have to choose "Sort by none" or something like it in order for it to stay the way you had it.

    Forgive me if I'm unclear or wrong; I haven't used Windows or IE in so long it's getting hard to remember the details. ^^;

  31. I found a small bug. Once you have enable "Sync on Shutdown" it cannot be disabled. When I "untick" that option it will be "ticked" again next time I start IE.

Solution was to find the correct registry setting and change it manually from "true" to "false". Quite simple if you're comfortable with editing the registry.

I am running IE7 on Vista 64 and using v0.8.67 of foxmarks.

BTW I love Foxmarks for IE. I am using Firefox most of the time and I've been using Foxmarks for a long time to sync FF bookmarks across all my computers.

Until FF3 I used "Syncmarks" (FF extension) to copy all my FF bookmarks to IE locally on each computer. But after FF3 this is no longer possible as "Syncmarks" does not support F3 and does not seem to be maintained. With Foxmarks for IE I now have two-way sync between Firefox and IE on all my computers.

This is one of those tools I just "cannot live without" :)

  32. Hi, I'm waiting for a safari on Mac OS X plugin. That would be great. And also a Opera plugin. Foxmarks is good, but It would realy kick ass if it would be available for more browsers, because with this, it would make the most sense to me. I constantly hop from browser to browser, so I would really like to have them on all of them. ;-)

    Regards

    Casper :-)

  35. This is great! We use IE a lot at work but I'm a Linux Firefox user at home. I've wanting a cross browser sync for a long time. Thanks and keep up the great work.

  36. I would love to participate in this testing; however, I use IE8. I am assuming that you need to focus on most widely distributed browsers but can you give any idea of when compatibility with IE8 will be made available. Great work guys!

  37. I have just installed Foxmarks for IE on my laptop running XP SP2. IE version was 6. After installing Foxmarks (v0.8.67) I got the following message when I've tried to use it for the first time:

"It appears that you're running an unsupported version of Internet Explorer. You can force Foxmarks to run in an unsupported mode by restarting IE and selecting 'Continue' when prompted"

I couldn't run it in that mentioned "unsupported mode" (I've never got the 'Continue' message after restarting IE).

Suspecting that my IE version was effectively "unsupported", I've updated my IE. I have installed IE 7.0.5730.13, but the behavior when trying Foxmarks is exactly the same. Any hint?

  38. Hey Felipe,

Thanks for trying out our alpha! And sorry things aren't working for you. We've run into a few problems with our IE version detection code. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to work around it with the current release. We're changing things in our next release, you won't run into that error anymore. Sadly, the best plan for you is to wait for our next release.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ok, thanks for the answer. I'll definitely wait for the next release, Foxmarks is exactly was I was needing to synchronize my bookmarks between different computers and browsers, so it is worth to wait.
