Foxmarks v2.5.3: Hiccups Resolved!

We just launched Foxmarks v2.5.3 on the official Mozilla Add-ons site to resolve two issues in the last release that affected some of you. We normally keep our updates to the Add-ons site to a minimum, but we felt that this release was necessary to ensure that no more people experience these problems.

• Firefox Crashes: Some of you, particularly those running 64-bit Linux, experienced Firefox crashes after installing Foxmarks v2.5.0. After some investigation, we discovered that the root cause was a bug in how Firefox parses non-standard values for HTTP authentication headers. We notified the folks at Mozilla about the issue and they've raised it to a "critical" bug and already have a patch that should be available in future Firefox versions. See the Mozilla bug here. This version of Foxmarks includes a workaround for this issue. (Discuss)


• Foxmarks Hangs on Setup: Some of you found that Foxmarks froze when setting it up on a second computer. After being unable to reproduce it for the first two days, we finally had a breakthrough last night and put a fix out this morning. (Discuss)

Oct 22: Fix for those using their own FTP servers available
Some users who use their own FTP servers have also told us that after enabling Password Sync, Foxmarks keeps on popping up a dialog box asking them how to merge their bookmarks. We have a fix available, but it won't be pushed out to the Official Add-ons site for another couple of weeks. Till then, you can download v2.5.4 from our site to fix this issue. (Discuss)

Still working on customized toolbar issue
A few of you have mentioned that Foxmarks causes your customized toolbars to lose their configuration. We haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet, but we have added some code to this release that may resolve the problem. (Discuss)

Sync Hiccups? We're On It!

We launched v2.5 of Foxmarks yesterday after several weeks of beta testing with thousands of users and a rigorous QA process. Most of our users are running v2.5 without difficulty. Unfortunately, it's hard for us to test for every unique environment, and some users have run into issues. We're working on resolving these issues as soon as possible:

Linux Firefox Crashes (fix available)

Linux users have reported that Firefox crashes immediately, or after synchronizing. This seems to predominantly affect 64-bit Linux users.

Foxmarks v2.5 Has Arrived: Sync Your Passwords and More!

You asked and we listened. Over the past year, we've received many requests to sync passwords, especially after Google Browser Sync went offline and recommended Foxmarks. Today, we are are pleased to announce that Foxmarks can do exactly that. This release also includes dozens of other product improvements to make Foxmarks better.

Securely Sync Your Passwords

You can now sync your passwords across your computers. Password sync is 100% optional and is turned off by default. Your passwords are secured by encrypting them before they leave your computer with a PIN that only you know. You can also assign your passwords to sync profiles to keep your personal passwords at home, and your work passwords at the office. To encrypt your passwords, Foxmarks uses the current state of the art AES 256-bit encryption algorithm. AES is a United States government standard and is recommended by National Security Adminstration (NSA) for encrypting classified information. See the AES Wikipedia entry for more details.

AES works by taking data that needs to be encrypted along with a secret PIN of your choosing, and then produces an encrypted result. It is strong enough to virtually guarantee that your encrypted data cannot be decrypted by a third-party, not even Foxmarks. The biggest point of weakness is in the strength of the secret PIN that you choose. Foxmarks recommends that you choose a PIN that is difficult to guess and contains a variety of different characters and numbers.

Other Improvements

Version 2.5 also includes several usability, stability and security enhancements. We've made the sync progress dialog (above) much simpler, added status info to the settings dialog (below), and in general made Foxmarks more robust and easy to use.
