We've heard the news about Delicious, and want our users to know that we're currently working on a solution for migrating your Delicious bookmarks directly to Xmarks.
It's already possible to import your Delicious bookmarks by exporting to your favorite browser, setting up and installing Xmarks, and then syncing the browser data to your Xmarks account. We recommend checking out the Lifehacker article on how to get started: http://lifehacker.com/5714313/.
We will have a direct importer available within the next day or so to make the process even easier.
If you have friends or family currently using Delicious who are looking for an alternative, recommend Xmarks!
Delicious is/was free - Xmarks isn't it as from Jan/Feb 2011, isn't it?
ReplyDelete@Chris Xmarks remains free for everything except basically mobile applications.
ReplyDeletePlease, make possible import with all tags and notes!
ReplyDeleteLifehacker article don't import tags, just the notes.
Thanks!

Xmarks and LastPass Premium user
X-marks (and LastPass) is SO WONDERFUL it just doesn't seem right not paying for it. When I hit the PayPal button, it felt like I was saying, "Thank you."
ReplyDeleteSure, you (and I) can still get LastPass and Xmarks for free but the service is so absolutely great and useful that I'm very happy to pay the small amount for the pro versions to support them. I think these are the best free products on the web since Webshots.
ReplyDeleteThe minuscule amount or $20 a year.. an entire year.. for the ability to keep my bookmarks and passwords synced to all my computers, safely and securely, being able to access them from any computer on the web at any place at any time is well worth it, don't you think? And no, I don't work for these guys.
I hacked up a tool to convert from a del.icio.us HTML export to Firefox's JSON backup / restore format. It preserves the tags and descriptions on your bookmarks, and after importing to Firefox you can sync to XMarks. It works for me, your mileage may vary.
ReplyDeleteIt's available at http://xdlcs.com with step by step instructions.
Delicious will not close:

Let the LastPass to buy delicious rumours start here!
ReplyDeleteKinda sad the way things are turning out, I just hope someone buys them from Yahoo. Anyway I am looking forward to Xmarks having full support of importing Delicious bookmarks with all it's tags together.
ReplyDeleteRead Brett's post above. I was able to get my 1000+ bookmarks WITH TAGS from Delicious to Xmarks with about 5 minutes effort.
ReplyDeleteThanks Brett!
I can export my Delicious bookmarks, with tags to HTML. But so far, I have found no way to import without losing the tags. I tried the link from Brett, and got a whimsical, unhelpful error message that says nothing useful. I tried the xmarks blog's suggestion to import to a browser, then sync, but as the lifehacker article said, you lose the tags. I don't know why xmarks implies you can do it.
ReplyDeleteI've been using delicious since it started, and I don't really want to start over with a big bucket of links and no categories. I paid for LastPass, and like it, and it imported my password safe data in its entirety. When xmarks can do a similar feat, maybe I'll buy it, too.
I finally got Brett's link to work. I was making a mistake by not exporting my Firefox bookmarks, since I had none. But I guess it still requires the file.
ReplyDeleteNow, if Xmarks would just stop giving so many strange error messages, like unable to access database, or sync error, etc, I would be pretty happy.
I used the xdlcs.com link too (thanks, extra-t Brett!) and was very pleased to see everything from delicious.com sync up. I'm a faithful LastPass Premium guy so am hoping for the same indispensable utility out of Xmarks, which seems quite similar.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if there's a way to browse by tag or tag intersection on my.xmarks.com, I can't find it... Am I just missing something obvious, or is it not supported?
I was recommended Xmarks, so here I am! The only thing I don't get is why I am hearing about this now. I seem to always be the last to find out... The archives suggest I'm four years behind (again).
ReplyDeleteLets give it a go!!
thanx
Is the official imported from delicious available yet??
