Foxmarks 2.0.34 Launched

A few moments ago, we submitted Foxmarks 2.0.34 to the Firefox Add-ons site. Existing users of any earlier version of the extension should receive update notifications through Firefox. Please note that if you upgrade from version 1.0.1 to this version (or any other version of Foxmarks 2) that you need to update all of your computers, as Foxmarks 1 and Foxmarks 2 do not sync with each other. For details of what’s new in this upgrade, check out our original post.

We’re monitoring the upgrade process closely from our end and expect that everything will go relatively smoothly, especially compared to the bumpy attempted launch in November. Once it’s clear that everything is stable, we’ll post more information here for the curious about how we improved our capacity compared to last month. We’re not superstitious by nature, but in this case we’ll try to avoid jinxing anything by declaring a premature victory.

Update: We’re several hours in to the upgrade now, and from all signs, things are going well. We’re converting a bit over one user per second to Foxmarks 2 (well over 10,000 so far). We’ve heard from a few folks with problems — not surprising given the size of the audience — but on a percentage basis, more than 99.5% of users are converting without complaint.

Update 2: We’ve had 60,000 users successfully upgrade thus far. We’re making some adjustments right now, shifting load amongst the servers to try to get things to move faster. We appreciate your patience.

Update 3: As many of you have observed, our servers are super-slow right now in responding to all of the traffic, with wait times of as much as 3 minutes to sync; some users are getting “Connection Reset” errors. We know it’s frustrating to you, but hope you can be patient as the new system digests all of the incoming data — we’ll get there. Also, please try not to confuse slowness with complete failure — Foxmarks 2 is working, but we have more than 500,000 users to migrate to the new system. In the past 24 hours, we’ve migrated over 72,000 users, and we’re working to increase the rate of migration. Don’t lose faith!

Update 4: Well, it has been a rough day for the elves here at Foxmarks Central. If you are a Foxmarks user, it was no doubt a rough day for you, too. We took advantage of the recent quiet period this evening to re-engineer one component and tune the overall system. As the East Coast of the U.S. comes online tomorrow morning, we’re anticipating another rush — likely smaller than today’s, but probably still challenging for us. As several of the commenters in the thread below have observed, things will return to normal once we’re through this transition. In the meantime, we appreciate whatever patience you can muster.

Update 5: From our vantage here at Foxmarks Central, we can now — finally! — see the storm clouds clearing. Thursday should bring the first glimpses of the sun since the launch process began, and on Friday, we forecast clear skies. For those who don’t appreciate metaphor: on Thursday we expect server performance to approach normalcy. By Friday, everything should be — dare we say it? — normal.

Thanks to those of you who were patient through this ordeal, and especially to those of you who voiced support for what we’re doing. This has been difficult for us, too, and your kind words helped power us forward. To those of you who have been critical: we understand your frustration, and apologize for the inconvenience we’ve caused you. But to the person who referred to Foxmarks as “the Vista of Firefox Extensions”: that, sir, was uncalled for and below the belt.

We’ll be doing a post here tomorrow that explains more about what we’re doing and why. Please stay tuned for more.

Update 6:  The bad news is that we didn’t get to make the blog post today that we talked about doing yesterday — please check back here tomorrow for that. The good news is that we have continued to dial in improvements in server performance, as many of you have noted this evening. We are also now well past the big wave of user upgrades, so we can now start to shift from crisis management to ongoing care and feeding. The service is definitely on the mend; tomorrow should be good day.

Comments

Don’t know about the upgrade yet, since am using a computer without foxmarks, but the server seems to be overwhelmed anyway. When I try to access the bookmarks online, it says its too busy to respond :)

Sounds great! I tried it earlier but ran into problems and had to go back to version 1. My only concern is that version 1 seems to be gone. If I have problems with version 2, is there a link somewhere to version 1?

Thanks

@Sonya:

The error message, alas, lies. More likely there is a problem with your sync file on our server. And that will likely fix itself when you upgrade.

@David Macdonald:

Previous versions are archived on the Firefox Add-ons site. But we don’t recommend reverting unless something catastrophic happens.

Upgraded to Foxmarks 2 on both my desktop and notebook. Neither is able to sync. Notebook has been syncing for over an hour to no avail.

I’m very happy with 1.0.1. (Like everyone else, I offer thanks for a great product.) At what point will the pain of not having 2.xxxx be too great to stay with what I have?

Just upgraded to 2.0.34 (Firefox 2.0.0.11; Mac OS 10.4.11).

When I attempt to sync, I get a “Synchronisation error” message, and the sync didn’t complete.

Same thing happened last time I attempted to upgrade to v2. Except I didn’t get an error message that time.

“But we don’t recommend reverting unless something catastrophic happens.”
I’m going to downgrade to v1. That extension works without any difficulties. I’d say that bookmark synchronisation extension that doesn’t synchronise, falls under the category of “catastrophic” happening.

- Richard

I give up! Version 2 seems to be plagued.
Back to V.1 for me.

@Phil:

We’ll keep 1.0.1 around for a while, but we’re definitely planning to shut it down once Foxmarks 2 has proven its reliability in the field.

@Richard, Jerome:

Sounds like downgrading is the right thing to do for you. We’d really appreciate it if you’d send us your log, though — the only way for us to improve the product is to hear from users who encountered trouble of some sort.

-Todd

I’ve tried the new version 2 on two empty profiles.
No error, but there are no synchronization.

For now, I take care of my version 1

I’ll pass the latest log I have along, but it’s a 110MB file.

Please email details of an FTP site you want me to use and I’ll upload it in the next 24hrs or so.

I really am beginning to think v2 of this extension has proved the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Had a bit of an issue installing on my work computer. Trying and retrying eventually got it installed.

However, I can’t seem to get my home computer to install at all. Someit gives me a URL error. Once it told me it is not compatible with FF 2.0.0.11.

It has been frustrating. This is the first ever extension that has given me issues…

- alphadog

I’ve been using 2.0.34 for a while now without problems. No problems on the last one or two versions either.
System: Linux nobu-desktop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 21:45:15 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Only had one problem, when I first installed on this computer. I guess I just didn’t see the option, but it overwrote all my bookmarks on the Foxmarks server. It’s been a while since then, and I had most of the bookmarks backed up, so no real problems. I wonder why others are having so many problems… *hmm*

@Godai71:

We looked into your account and didn’t see any attempts to sync with our server on your account. Perhaps you tried to sync with a different account?

@Richard:

We see that you’ve contacted support, so we’ll be responding to you there.

@alphadog:

Installation issues are typically not a Foxmarks problem — we rely on the mechanisms built into Firefox itself and the Firefox Add-ons site. If you continue to have problems, you can try installing from our site, too. If that doesn’t work, you may have a problem with your Firefox profile, in which case you should contact support so we can talk you through setting it straight.

@Nobu:

Thanks for the update. Statistically speaking, there aren’t that many problems. And some of the problems people encounter don’t have anything to do with Foxmarks itself.

I just installed 2.0.34 from the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons page for a fresh Firefox installation and during setup it simply uploaded my existing (Ubuntu) bookmarks to the server, rather than asking what I wanted it to do. I fear my hundred-plus bookmarks I actually had on the server are now clobbered. Is this true?

Great, I updated and now it won’t sync with my remote server. It hangs up trying to verify the account. Worked fine before. What do I do now? I don’t want to upgrade my other machines if it isn’t going to work. How can I revert back?

Well, I get ‘unknown error 400′. :(

Why force an upgrade when things went so wrong the last time? Maybe it’s time to find a new bookmark synch tool if you are going to keep on doing forced upgrades.

Great, tool. I’ve upgraded my laptop at home no problems and upgraded here at work too, but getting “Foxmarks is Busy” Alert at the moment.

OHNOEZ!! MY BOOKMARKS!!

Uh, when v2 installed, unlike v1 it does not give the usual option to sync with the server. It just — without any user-selectable option — uploads the bookmarks on the current FF to the server.

AARGH!!! I have to echo Taylor Venable here… MY BOOKMARKS ARE CLOBBERED!!! ALL 200 of them !!!

Gah! Thanks for nothing, devteam :-(

Very very slow, It’s get more than 5 minutes to sync… I hope it’s a temporal issue.

I reverted to the old version. What a disaster. Couldn’t get version 2 to work no matter what I did, using my own server, or theirs. I can’t believe I wasted so much time trying to get a basic browser add-on, that was been PERFECT until now, to work. Not supposed to happen. Perhaps foxmarks is too ambitious. I rely on this product every day, I guess maybe I shouldn’t.

Upgraded today but sync gets stuck in “performing merge”.
I’ve been waiting for almost 1/2 hour now and want to downgrade to v1.
Can’t find v1 on the Firefox Add-Ons site though!
Where can I find v1? That was perfect, the new v sucks, sorry.

I run foxmarks with 2 different accounts. on one pc it has worked since version 2 was first released. on my other account on my laptop I upgraded to version 2 yesterday, it syncd once and it hasn’t had a successful sync since.
Back to version 1 I suppose but when I log in to see my foxmarks it gives me the version 2 file – how do I get back to version 1?

I installed v2 on my laptop last night, and it works fine. this morning, I installed v2 on my work PC, and it keeps hanging up on the sync. any ideas as to why?

I was given the option to install Foxmarks 2 last evening in the UK. It installed just fine. It thereafter failed to sync. It has just now synced successfully for the first time. I was getting Internal Server Error 500 messages.

Whilst I appreciate some of the frustration evident in messages on this blog, I have to say I have found Foxmarks to be a great extension and the price is certainly right! Thank you for your dedication to the cause and the enormous contribution for the benefit of the community as a whole.

Hi

First of all, many thanks for the great product! Foxmarks is the most useful firefox add-on (at least for me!). Looking forward to the day when you release a version for Safari (for windows).

Regarding the new release, I found a bug in V2.0 but I couldn’t find any bug reporting system on your site so …

OS:Windows XP Pro
Browser: Firefox 2.0.0.11
Foxmarks 2.0.34

Firefox crashes when I start searching for emails in my gmail. After disabling foxmarks, it works just fine!

Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

thanks
Soroush

I just installed 2.0.34 from the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons page for a fresh Firefox installation and during setup it simply uploaded my existing. This morning I did the same on Portable Firefox and it just keeps on running like the Energizer Bunny. I think there is still a glitch in the system. I think I am going to see what I have to do to revert to the old system. I hope my bookmarks are still out on the server.

Tell me the problems are because the foxmarks server is overwhelmed now. Otherwise I also need to find V1 so I can go back.

After it upgraded automatically, it can’t sync and always said it server busy. I got the following when try to get to myFoxmarks:

“The My.Foxmarks bookmarks server is currently overwhelmed. We will not be able to provide you with your bookmarks at this time.

We apologize for this inconvenience.”

I am sorry about that but

IT DOESN’T WORK!!!!

Me too: no syncing, not working what can i do? i agree with the ‘why force an upgrade’ what does this offer that is better, the best it can do is still work?

hope Foxmarks for firefox3 can release soon…

I upgrade my firefox at office to 3 because it seems run faster on that old computer, but I can’t syncs my bookmarks between home & office.

I had the same problem as CL.

I am going to go back to v1 for now.

And then it hangs.

Went back to 1.0.1 and it works fine!

Similar problems for me – upgraded and now it doesn’t work. Going back to v1.

One machine lost all it’s bookmarks when I requested a download from the server – this software isn’t ready for use – don’t upgrade, and backup your bookmarks quickly, just in case.

Pah – second time this failed.

DON’T UPGRADE. doesn’t work.

Upgraded my home computer (Win00) last night with no problems. Today I upgraded my work computer and laptop (both XP) and both had trouble. My work computer final synced on its own after about an hour. Maybe this is just server issues?

I hope we get this fixed soon. I’m going to stop accepting these so-called “upgrades”. A modification that creates problems rather than fixing them is not an “upgrade” by any definition whatsoever.

If this was baseball I wouldn’t be complaining. . .

Desktop upgrade works fine

Work computer get this error:
unknown error 504
forxmarks: verifying account….

Home laptop get this error:
Connection reset.

After update, when foxmarks tries to sync, this error occurs: “Connection reset”.

What a nightmare. Get a clue, Foxmarks. Second failure in two months.

I have upgraded from foxmark 1 to the newest foxmarks. My only problem is that it takes forever to sync on all my computers. I have one still syncing and it has been well over 30 minutes.

Please advise…Foxmarks 1 sync in a matter of seconds.

Hello,

I was also quite happy with the previous version. I think I’ll have to revert back to it.

One thing that is driving me a bit nutty with this new version is the icon Foxmarks icon that appears in the bottom right of my browser window… It is constantly blinking. With no way of turning it off or of excluding the icon from appearing in the window. I don’t know about anyone else, but the constant blinking is always catching my eye, forcing me to look there. Which makes me crazy… It is like Chinese water torture in the digital world.

Regardless of the hassles version 2 has had, my thanks go to the developers of what has been a mighty fine product. I wish you luck in getting to the bottom of this current “update” so that you can once again rule supreme in the realm of bookmark syncronization.

Best regards,

AJ

Hi y’all!

OK, looking at the log files, reading the comments, I’m seeing some similarities and some common problems: They’re having server problems.

I upgraded 2 systems to v2. First PC took, synced quickly.
Second pc installed, I try to connect, I get errors, and it results in timeout messages. First PC will sync OK, second will fail with timeout errors.

People, Foxmarks 2 WILL WORK! It will just take some time for the servers to all get aligned and to stop being bombarded by all the users who are trying to do the same thing at the same time! Give it some time, and don’t give up yet.

Yes, you should backup your bookmarks first, but don’t flip out and start saying the product / developers / system sucks. Don’t get offensive because you chose to install their software that they work on for free.

You get what you pay for, and it’d be within their right to shut it down entirely with all the complaining people do. Respect their time, their work, give them a chance to make it happen as they know it should. Most importantly, be patient.

@AJ:
Right click on the status icon. Click on “Show Status Icon” to disable the icon.

Alternatively, you can go to Tools – Foxmarks – Show Status icon to toggle the icon on and off.

Remember to “reset advanced server settings” and it will all work smoothly.

Fair point; it is a great product and they do great work. Just frustrating……

I really think that Foxmark 2.0X should be made backwards compatible. I haven’t actually tried the updates myself but given how a lot of users who posted here are saying it’s not working, it does give me the feeling of what happened back in november. I think that foxmark v1 should be discontinued perhaps 2-3 years after Foxmark v2 has been established.

@Todd: If you check the email in the comment, I do not use this.

I have upgraded to V2 and have been unable to complete a successful sync. Since early posts were referring to the statistics of the new upgrade, I would like to ensure that my upgrade experience is reflected as unsuccessful statistically.

I agree that it’s a server problem, and that quite likely the client software will work properly once the server overload/glitches are solved. In the meantime, perhaps it would be wise to somehow warn individuals that they should backup their bookmarks prior to upgrading and attempting a sync. That way, even if the bookmarks are lost on the server, people can simply restore and perform a manual upload.

Is there any way that such a warning could be embedded into the automatic upgrade process that would allow people to perform a backup first? It sounds like it would save a lot of heartache (and complaints to developers).

Love Foxmarks. Thanks so much for your continued efforts!

I even tried to log on to the Foxmarks website, and it says that the server is overwhelmed.

My theory is that everyone is trying to connect after downloading the update so the servers are being DROWNED with inundations of synchronization requests, especially as businesses around the US (and world) get the notice that the new version is available.

So I’m thinking in a couple of days everything will settle down and Foxmarks will work again :)

Same story here. Upgrade didn’t complain but I get a “Connection Reset” when trying to sync.

Sure hope it’s just a network error and you can fix it. I very much like Foxmarks and would hate to give it up. I do appreciate you folks providing this for free. :)

I am unable to sync at all using v2. i continually get a message that the server is unavailable.

btw, I turned off automatic syncing months ago, since it always clobberd some of the bookmarks on one of my 4 machines. now I keep track of where I added new bookmarks and manually upload from there and download on my other machines.

Upgraded to V2 but I cannot sync. Keep getting:
connnection reset. Looks like I am not the only one having this problem. Hopefully the error will be sorted out soon

I upgraded my laptop last evening (Finnish time) and it worked but asked for password and checked the account. I upgraded my desktop at work this morning (about 10 or so hours ago) and it seemed to work, and synchronize. Now I am at home, and I get the reset error, or it just tries for a long time to synchronize (I cancelled after a few minutes). However, I cannot access the foxmarks through the web interface either: it gives server busy. It then looks like this is a server side problem… doesn’t it? So instead of trying to desperately downgrade I have just disabled automatic synchronization while things clear up. However, doing a backup is always wise. Just my two cents.

i synchrronise with my own webdav server .. it works perfekt with v1
but with 2.0.34 i alway get “Foxmarks is Busy” or “Verifying account…”
i deleted the file on the server and tried an upload … the same.

i downgrade to v1 wich works perfekt.

For EVERYONE that is having problems here is the URL for VERSION 1.0.1 ENJOY it works perfectly.

Chris, at 9:05 you said to “reset advanced server settings”, Where and How?

That is not an option on any of the FoxMarks menus.

ON my 1st pc now I have this

‘connection reset’ problem..
back to v.1.1?

Looks like I picked the wrong day to try foxmarks. Hope you get it up soon.

My connection keeps getting reset even though I’ve disabled my personal firewall. For me the switch is not going smoothly.

Yeah..same problem..”connection reset”. Anyways, I went back to v.1 ..works great insofar. I’m sure that v.2 will be great too..as soon as you guys solve the minor details.

In any case, congrats for this extension: very useful!! Keep it up!!!

WOW! Foxmarks 2.0 has been a disaster. I’m glad I was able to reinstall the old version. I don’t have time to think about your upgrade problems. Fix them before you push out this version to people!

This release is totally bogus. All I get is “Foxmarks is busy” or “Verifying account”, even though I’m configured to sync to my own server. It’s always worked flawlessly until this release. What the..?

I haven’t upgraded to FM 2.0 yet – after the bumpy first release of version 2. However, I’ll certainly check back regularly and as soon as FM 2 has proven itself stable. You people are making online-life easier for _literally_ hundreds of thousands of users! Nice! How do _you_ feel about that? Never mind… Many thanks for Foxmarks anyhow!

I am having the same “Foxmarks Is Busy”, “Connection Reset”, constantly trying to sync unsuccessfully problems as pretty much the last 5+ posts above me.

I’ve already sent an e-mail to support, but I think I might have to go back to v.1

Glad I only tried to upgrade on 1 of my 3 computers… :-(

And now that I have downgraded to 1.01, I STILL can’t sync! Keep getting “Connection was reset” or “Failed to parse sync file”.

Use FM on 3 computers. upgraded to 2.0.34 on all 3.
#1 install – Don’t have access to at the moment; it’s at work; did not make backup
#2 install – status last sync 3 mins ago; unfortunately it seems to have lost some bookmarks; then when noted had lost bookmarks (looks like several day older version of bookmarks), tried to download (force overwrite of local bookmarks). did not make backup
#3 install – (made backup which is accurate back to this morning but loses 20 new bookmarks from today.. ) looks like it tries to download sync file.. error says server currently unavailable.

Tried old link from November to go back to 1.01, but that took me to 2.0.34.

Hopefully have not lost too many bookmarks.
Knew I should have waited. Figured the 2nd widespread release, this would be ready for prime time :(

Keep trying. Thanks for your work

Where do we find 1.0.1 link to redownload?

Well its not working properly itself and its also managed to knock out Google reader in the process which is real pain in the arse – I can manage without Fox marks but not goggle reader. Basically it never finishes actually making any kind of update. Will you sort this problem or shall I just give up on it as a bad job – I have posted a blog post to warn other Google readers.

> Where do we find 1.0.1 link to redownload?
It’s available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/2410

You need to disable Firefox’s automatic upgrade check (Preferences/Options… Advanced… Update) otherwise Firefox will keep updating to v2.0.34 when it starts.

Alternatively install MR Tech Local Install and use the Disable Update feature (right-click – PC/Ctrl-click – Mac OS X the Foxmark Bookmark extension in the Extensions palette) to stop v2 re-installing itself.

- Richard

Installed 2.x, problems, uninstalled 2.x, reinstalled 1.x no problems, sticking with 1.x.

Thanks for good work though.

I’ll say this on behalf of Foxmarks: If you have already upgraded to the newer version of Foxmarks, and you have a backup of your bookmarks, please don’t revert to the old version. Many people are doing the same thing at the same time. If you think of your computer, it likely has less than 56k/s upload limit, and not much more than 200k/s download limit. With thousands–possibly millions of users upgrading at the same time there will be network problems. If everyone reverts, then upgrades again, we will only have the same problem(Until everyone is done or they upgrade their network service and hardware).

Things may get worse before they get better, but if you hold on you won’t have to experience it getting worse again(Hopefully). ^.^

Had 1.x – loved it.
Upgraded to 2.x – no more syncing
Uninstalled 2.x
Reinstalled 1.x
Loving it again !

I have been using the foxmarks 2 for a few weeks (directly from your site) after upgrading some of my computers when you took it live the first time. 2.0 works flawlessly, though was of course rather slow today (and failing at certain times).

I realize, and I hope many others do as well, that this is a temporary issue. There are tonnes of users being brought on to the new system all in a very short period of time. Things will improve shortly, I’m sure.

Thanks to everybody involved.

It’s not working after upgrade ;(

http://d077.narod.ru/

Guys, I would like to say that FoxMarks is a Super Duper idea and I think it will get better and better with time, but PLEASE, do something about the SERVER BUSY thing! Since I upgraded to Foxmarks 2, (Foxmarks 1 isn’t available on your site nor Mozilla anymore) my 3 FireFox browsers (2 WinXP + 1 Linux) keep on MERGING links and my organized bookmarks now have duplicates and they Synchronize whenever they feel like syncing!
I had asked you in the past NOT to release v2 if you weren’t sure you could support it. v1 was fantastic and I don’t understand why you had to “upgrade”. I must admit I am hooked now and I need this thing to work.

PLEASE Do something! I understand you have a HUGE demand, but Foxmarks 1 worked! Why change that!?!?!

Please, make Foxmarks 1 available again.

Foxmarks 2 is NOT working:

Last sync: never (since upgrade)

Status: Foxmarks is busy (for 20 hours already!)

I seem not to be the only one with problems… :/

No, foxmarks2 does not work for me either. After 30min some of my bookmarks were duplicated yesterday. Very OLD bookmarks btw. The ones that I’ve deleted a few weeks ago came back for some reason???

Today nothing works. The last lines in the log says:

[2007-12-19 09:42:31] Calling Synchronize()

[2007-12-19 09:42:31] Returned error: Synchronization error(3)

I have no idea what it means. HELP! I (used to) love this little plugin!!

only started using foxmarks (v1) the day before v2 became available – so obviously upgraded – v2 didn’t work (no sync at all) so i’ve downgraded to v1, and everything is fine !

foxmarks is just what i needed to keep bookmarks in order over 3 pc’s (2 * XP, 1 * linux) over 3 sites, and v1 is doing it a treat – thanks foxmarks – good luck with sorting out the bugs in v2 :)

As my father used to say to me: – “if it works leave it”!. Why dont the elves at Foxmarks take this on board. This is the 2nd upgrade that has failed. Version 1 works fine! I have spent far too long trying to get V2 working to no avail. Thank God for the links in this blog for going back to V1. No more please. Leave things stand unless you know they are going to work!

I’m getting the 504 error too and it is unable to sync bookmarks.

I didn’t get this problem in the previous version.

What a great add-in.
I just started to use FF a couple of months ago, and this has to be THE BEST add-in I’ve seen. Such a simple idea, but a nightmare to actually code (I’ll bet) so my hat is off to you guys, well done.

I upgraded recently, and, yes, it was slow to synch, but it did get there and is working great on three PCs now – all for nix…I’m still in awe…well done!

TP

@Todd: Thanks for your effort.
In this moment, GMT+1 11:30 (italy), seem to work fine
with test account.
But I’m still with 1.0.1 on my real account, with the same bookmarks file

Never mind the people who complain: your soft is a nice and useful piece of programming. And some may need to be reminded that it is FREE.
Kudos everyone at dev team.
We can and will wait for you to wear the kinks out of that new version.
Keep up the good work and many many thanks !!!

Yesterday I had lots of the same errors with v2 as everyone else, but I just figured it was start-up cost and put it aside.

Today Foxmarks is working A-OK. Syncing takes several minutes, but that will probably improve. Haven’t tried it with my own server yet.

v2 seems to be a nice improvement over v1. In particular, the old problem where Foxmarks churned the CPU for a long time seems to have been mitigated.

Thanks for a very useful and free product.

Hey you complainers: take it easy. Reporting problems is in order, but stop dumping on the people who are giving you the free stuff.

I use Foxmarks with my own FTP server. No problem on my home computer. On my work computer, however, it seems that it can’t connect to the server (the icon keeps on with the connection animation and the bookmarks are never synchronized). This didn’t happen with version 1, so I think I’ll downgrade again.

Jeahhh I made it ;)

I use my own FTP-Server an have all the problems above since the new version, but the Fix is easy :)

At the Version 1:
- Only Server and Path must be write into the fields

At the Version 2:
- Server, Path + Filename must be written in

eg: ftp://server.com/bookmarks/foxmarks.json

The update says ony:
ftp://server.com/bookmarks/

Now put your filename behind and it works fine (for me and I hope for you)

Have patience people! The sky wouldn’t fall if you won’t be able to sync your bookmarks for couple of days. This upgrade would work better than the v 1 and it’s meant to work better then the old version.

Hi! Greetings from Estonia.
I’m a huge fan of Foxmarks. I’ve been using it for the past year and it is far most useful add-on so far. Whether or not it works at the moment, is irrelavant. [:D] (Still i prefer the working fine option)
The problem i have now is quite similar to everyone elses in most of the previous posts… it just doesn’t/didn’t sync. The last time (in November) i downgraded back to 1.0.1 version, after which the syncing worked again – well sort of.. It seemed to sync between my PCs, thus i conclude it uploaded them to the Foxmarks server, but i couldnt gain access to them over the web..
This is exactly what occured this, the second, time. Yesterday i upgraded my foxmarks to latest version (the 2nd time after the crash at november) as it was added to FF addons site. It continiously tried to sync for 3 or 4 hours until i closed it. It still hasn’t sync’ed my bookmarks.. I think i’m going to downgrade once again for the time being and hope it still works.. I can allready anticipate your wish of seeing my log file thus i have uploaded it to the following location: http://www.hot.ee/racer16/foxmarks.log

All in all i agree with Thierry a few posts back.. you are doing a great job.. I can’t wait to see the fully functional version.. Keep up the good work.. [:D]

I see, I am not alone.
But that is no solution, it is cold comfort:-)

Back to V. 1, that`s it.
V.1 does ALL the things I need.
In Perfection.
Thanx for that.

Keep up the good work guys. I know you’ll get V2 working soon.

BTW, by the time I got to the bottom of this blog, I was getting very angry at the complainers. I’ve been in tech support for 20 years, and I’ve learned over and over again that user is a 4 letter word.

Give the poor guys a break. If you don’t know what’s going on, assume that they are working their a**es off to get the problem fixed. They’ll let all of you know when the problem is resolved.

Reminder to back up your book marks, just in case! Only makes good, common sense.

I updated to the new version but one time only I uploaded successfully my bookmarks. Then it always says there’s a 502 error from the webserver.

Fabio

I just upgraded mine (4 PCs) this weekend. My work PC showed the icon in the status bar (don’t think it was showing on the other 3 PCs) and always showed Synchronizing. Decided to look into it today and find out it is stalling at Verifying Account. Looked around Internet, tried redownloading and not finding an answer and finding lots of other people having similar issues, resorted to reporting my issues with the recent upgrade…
Brent

Great work, Dudes!

Patience will pay off people.
Yesterday, I was having a hell of a time getting it to work. One PC would sync immediately, and not again. My other PC wouldn’t connect to save my life.

Today, no problems, both are syncing. Server’s getting bombarded by everyone and their mother for the upgrade, while they’re also upgrading accounts on the backend. When the dust settles, it’ll be good, but until then, have some patience and don’t freak out.

It’s not crap, it’s not broken, it’s just overloaded. Remember folks, it’s free, it’s not like there’s tens of thousands of dollars for more and new servers, someone has to pay for all this, and they’re doing what they can.

To those of you who work on the software: Great job, despite the little glitches. DOn’t get discouraged, and if people whine too much, just shut down your servers for a week. :)

sorry that thing dont work at all for me, its very frustrating, i cannot get to sync with any server or load up any bookmarks, tried the last 2 days…

i used the version 1 before and was happy with it, i didnt even wanted to upgrade but somehow it did it automatically…

bleh, i think i will just uninstall, my time is too precious to waste with things that dont seem to work.

I’m here on the east coast. Still having issues. On the Mac, it’s stuck at Verifying Account and then errors out with “Connecton Reset”. I think my Windows machine worked once last night and then stuck at trying to sync.

I like most folks was pretty happy with the older version and regret not waiting til prob with the new version was resolved. Perhaps it should have been done in stages so not everyone is upgrading at the same time.

Upgrading to 2.x when you are using your own server, a step-by-step guide.

This is what I had to do.

1) make sure you have every machine you are interested in synced with version 1.0.1 first.

2) upgrade foxmarks on all machines

3) Pick one machine (hereby called MASTER), make sure it has file.json in the URL setting.

4) on MASTER, do a manual overwrite “Upload” of bookmarks

5) on every other machine, do a manual overwrite “Download”

Then it started working fine for me.
My environment:
Machine 1: Win XP, FF 2.0.0.11
Machine 2: Win XP, FF 2.0.0.11
Machine 3: linux Ubuntu feisty, FF 2.0.0.11
Machine 4: linux Fedora 5, FF 1.5.0.3
Server: RHEL4, apache 2.0.52 (Using webdav interface)

Here’s one thing I will note about the new version:
Poor error recovery. When you first install, and try to do a sync before an upload, the .json file obviously does not exist. From the log file, foxmarks receives a 404 error. One would think this would cause foxmarks to error out, but for some reason it then just hangs forever, and you have to restart firefox completely to get foxmarks to perform tasks again.

Keep fighting the good fight. For the nay sayers and whiners out there, hang tough. They always fix it and it is worth the wait. What do you want for free? Give them time and it will all be better. Keep the faith.

Some other notes:
foxmarks is busy: restart firefox
verifying account stall: I got this on machines that upgraded to 2.x but hadn’t done a manual download yet
connection reset: I think I was getting this after getting 404’s from the server.. then foxmarks would be busy: restart firefox

BTW. I *love* foxmarks. I’ve worked on free software before and know it’s a thankless job, so THANKS FOR THE HARD WORK. I’m just throwing notes in that i’m noticing to try to make it easier to make work and hopefully help some of the people that are having problems with the upgrade.

Foxmarks, please enable option to revert to 1.something. This is clearly not working here. Why releasing beta and forcing all of us to upgrade? My PC and laptop are constantly with red exclamation mark.

First of all will I tell you that I love this product and know your are working on getting things going again.

Do you have any idea or forecast when the it will work again?.

Foxmarks 1.0.1 no longer syncs.
I did not upgrade at all – still using 1.0.1 under W2K – but I cannot get it to sync any more. It generally worked until the past 24 hours.

I have tried many times and the sync runs for a random amount of time (2 seconds to 2 minutes) and then fails with “connection reset”. This can happen immediately, or after “downloading sync file”, or after any subsequent phase prior to completion.

I also often get a message similar to “server unavailable”.
The servers must be broken, or very busy. My machines are not the fastest, and I am located in Australia which puts me more hops away from the US than many users, so this may exacerbate the problem.

One problem I have always had with Foxmarks

Just got all (4 ) of my systems updated. Keep up the good work guys and THANK YOU!

When can we expect a version of foxmarks that will work with Firefox 3 Beta?

First of all, I LOVE this product. The interface is simple and elegant, and I stopped using Google bookmarks. The version 2 is great in its web 2.0 vision, and I love it even more.

However, the server seems to be busy all the time. I have a hard time in synchronizing bookmarks, getting the cruel message “The server is overwhelmed… Try later…”. I’ve been “trying later” many times, but still cannot get the first sync successful after the version 2 upgrade on two of my computers.

I upgraded yesterday — no problem. This morning, Foxmarks wanted me to log in and then wiped out my bookmarks. Now, of course, I am stuck in the “our servers are overwhelmed” mode.

Thanks a million.

Hi.
I am going through the update process to version 2.0.34, unfortunately I’m having a lot of troubles to sync, sometimes I get a “conection reset” error, or it just seems to freeze while making the sync.
I understand this may be because a lot of people is trying to connect at the sime time, but when do you expect things will return to normal? I would appreciate if you keep us updated.

Thanks!

Rubén

I upgrated on 17th and since this time foxmarks did not synchronize. Is it still server problem or some fault on my side? All the time error like: “Connection reset”. I like the new version, but i hope it will start work soon. Radomir

I gave up on 2.xx. It stopped working last night and failed to update at all. I can’t afford to lose and marks I made. I will upgrade in about a month after the roll out has worked all the problems out for 2.x.

Thanks for such a great utility. Merry Christmas

Hey Foxmarks team: this is one of my favorite extensions, and I appreciate all your work.

My upgrade to 2.0.34 was maybe a bit slow, but I got both my computers to do it. Considering the load the server must be under, I’m pleased that it worked at all!

Thanks again for all you do with this fantastic extension. I’m amazed that I can get such a great product for free!

Love Foxmarks, hate to see these problems.

I upgraded to 2.0.34 on my desktop w/ no problems. Installed same on my laptop for the first time and I’m stuck on “downloading sync file”.

Here’s hoping for the best.

I DID make a backup of my bookmarks to a file before upgrading, which is what everyone should do first.

Your servers are always busy recently. What’s the deal? Is this something that we’re going to have to live with for the forseeable future?

So if the problem is with the servers, how come version 1.01 works perfectly and the new 2.0.x version doesn’t? Isn’t everything running from the same set of servers? Like others I reverted to ver 1.0.1 and will stay with it until all the connection issues are fixed.

I hate being an unwilling beta-tester for things like this.

Dear elves at Foxmarks Central,

it still does not work. Could you please keep us posted what to do? Because this way it’s just no fun anymore.

Thanks and have a great holiday season …

Chris

OK…thank you, Foxmarks folks, for your yeomans work on this handy li’l program.

But this upgrade is getting frustrating beyond belief.

I decided to upgrade all 3 of my computers today, and none are syncing (or are constantly trying with no success, slowing down Firefox considerably).

I will try to be patient…but I just don’t understand why I CAN sync with version 1.0.1 (I successfully did a manual sync before upgrading on each of my computers), yet I CAN’T sync with 2.0.34 at all. Aren’t the servers the same?!

Please keep us posted as to what to do to correct this once and for all…short of downgrading, which I am close to doing.

What’s up guys?

Just sold my notebook and bought a macbook.
Fine, i am able to use foxmarks to sync my pages…

but the last 2 days there was no connection possible.
today, foxmarks updated… FINALLY.

But instead of downloading my favs to my macbook, foxmarks did a sync the other way. now i have no favs and only the standard pages after a fresh firefoxinstall in firefox and on my foxmarks account.

NEED BACKUP GUYS!!!!!

Dear Foxmarks Developers.
First off, you guys are GREAT! My new version doesn’t work right now, but THAT’S OK! I’m sure you’re working feverishly on getting this to work.

You made this insanely handy tool, and you’re working to make it better. Seems there are some hiccups in the release but my life isn’t going to end because this isn’t working right now, actually I don’t mind being patient. I’m sure everything will work it’s way around all the kinks.

In the mean time, a BIG THANKS for even developing this, making it free and doing your best to make it better!

After upgrading to latest version no more siync was possibile
On all my 4 PC always same message “foxmark is busy”

What happen folks ?

U made a very great piece of plugins but please dont destroy it whith bad upgrades

Bye

Foxmarks is working seamlessly on my Vista laptop, but my XP desktop and XP work computer will not update at all and haven’t in two days. If it was just a server problem, why would Vista connect but not XP?

I just don’t understand why it works OK with 1.0.1 but not with 2.0.34.

I am going to look into something else like Windows Live Favorites or something else. I’m tired of being prompted to install the new version and then finding out that it doesn’t work AGAIN and having to go back to an older version.

Test the freaking shit before you put it out.

Damn

I really can’t complain since this is free software and I love version 1.x. Best extension for FF in my opinion!

This new version is a nightmare from I experienced and what I am reading here.

May I suggest that if the servers cannot handle the load, that you consider phased roll outs? Put it out there for a few hours then pull it. Wait a day, repeat. Then you have more controlled roll out, won’t overload the servers, and gives you time to correct issues that come up without wasting resources responding to all these complaints at the same time.

Good luck with the new version.

Version 2.0.34 don’t work! Status stay “downloading sync file…” and don’t move. Version 1 work fine. I do a downgrade at november, and now, another!

What´s happened?! I’m so tired about this needless
upgrades.

Note to Foxmarks creators…

-Don’t touch the code anymore. Leave us with 1.0.1 and be finished forever.

LOL.

Here’s my boss if my “upgrade” inconvenienced our users like this.

“You’re fired!”

No syncing here either since upgrading from 1.0.1 to 2.0.34.

What a way to kill a nice extension! :~(

Have these guys responded since their updates on the 17th?

This extension is free, so I’m cutting them a break on a bad deploy, but if they are just ignoring everybody, that seems like a good reason to stop cutting them a break.

A quick ETA would be nice.

Hopefully you all will be able to work this out. Great plugin! Especially for FREE!! Can’t really complain. I just have to take some responsibility and backup my bookmarks every once in a while myself just in case…

Good luck for you guys!

I only can imagine the challenge to migrate 500.000 users and their bookmarks. Thank God someone like you has the skills and the balls to face the risks and provide the service, FOR FREE!

Hope the experience gathered this time will be useful on FM 3.0.x release and it’s 2.000.000 (or more) users! ;)

Despite some occasional slowness, I could sync all day, without any problem. Even here, from Brazil. I was using 2.0.34 before official launch in Mozilla addons site.

I’ve been reading some of the comments and came to the conclusion that a very useful funcionality (and I think, rather simple to implement) was for Foxmarks to keep an history of the last N bookmarks on the local machine, so the users could recover locally from any type of incident. That would solve a lot of moaning from people that don’t do regular backups. Especially on occasions like this, of a major version bump.

I offer all my support, and hope for the best with this growth process.

I also think that the aggressive comments are rather unfair! The inconvenient is so small if compared to everything Foxmarks have done for me until today…

Hang tight! The storm will pass.

Last, but not least, I wish you all and your families a Merry Christmas and that God blessings come for all of you.

Thank you for making my life/work/internet MUCH easier !

Regards from Brazil,

Gustavo.

@REC December 19th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

REC: your url looks fine as far as construction goes. Since it’s your server, after doing the forced upload does the .json file show up on the server in that directory? If so, you must have it right.

Your log looks exactly like the machines I tried to sync that I hadn’t done a force upload/download yet.

One thing I think this does is creates an initial foxmarks-baseline…..json in your firefox profile directory that is used in the syncing.

Foxmark Developers,

v2.0.34 does not work but still a big thanks and appreciation for the work done. I am sure you are working around the clock to address the problem.

Keep up with the good work!

Merry Christmas!

After update – don’t work :’(

Woot! It finally completed a sync. The servers must be catching up. It’s 11:00 MST right now.

Nice job, guys!

Downgrade immediately! What a joke … there are other extensions out there that do this without the pain in the neck of waiting for 3 dang days to sync with the server!

Older versions can be found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/2410

Nice try but FAIL!

The overriding feeling on here is that V2 has bombed miserably and I have to say i’m of the same opinion… back to V1. However the following comment worries me :

…”We’ll keep 1.0.1 around for a while, but we’re definitely planning to shut it down once Foxmarks 2 has proven its reliability in the field.”…
[Todd]

how are you gauging the success/reliability of v2 ? There are loads of negative comments on here, the odd good comment, but you seem to insist that your figures tell a different story and things aren’t as bad as they seem (statistically speaking) .

It may be time to look at alternative add-ons for me!

Finally managed to sync with v2. Great job, guys!

@Quix 9:23pm 19 Dec:

Hurray!! Works like a champ! Fast, too! Now to upgrade more machines and overwrite from the server copy.

I feel for you guys who are using the central servers. I’d personally never send my bookmarks off to some site I don’t have complete control of.

For those of us using our own webDav servers, this works great once you follow Quix’s simple procedure (about 7 am today above).

This tells me that the issues are indeed nothing more than the result of a network firestorm of Foxmarks users swamping the central servers. Thank goodness I use my own.

Best of luck, guys, and thanks for Foxmarks!! WebDav rocks!

Your Foxmarks simply sucks! After I installed and synchronized I lost most part of my precious bookmarks — a “rare but serious” bug as reported at the error message… Stupid of me to trust the comments and info at the Mozilla add-ons pages… Do a favor to the others: don’t publish apps without first checking these “rare” bugs

Well, I have three PC’s using Firefox with Foxmarks (1 office – 2 at home), all are upgraded to the newest version of Firefox and Foxmarks.

Ever since the upgrade, I have not been able to sync up. Also when I did look at the result after thinking one PC worked, all the separators where replaced with blank lines (not a real seperator).

Also the sync, never seems to complete, it hangs there saying writing sync…

I love Foxmarks, and hope you guys can resolve any issues you have left. I hope this is just an overload issue, and will clear up.

Either way, have a very Happy Holiday and New Year !!!

Last night I was able to check 2 more of the 4 PCs I updated recently and they have synchronized fine. I have uninstalled the addon from the problem PC and will reinstall tomorrow after I restart.

Keep up the good work, guys at Foxmarks! And for those who are complaining: if you are not satisfied, try another software and you will quickly return to Foxmarks! No software on earth is perfect…

I know it is frustrating, especially for those who have lost their bookmarks! But even Micro$oft has problems with its softwares that are sold hundreds of dollars. Furthermore, M$ has much more resources and money than those guys at Foxmarks! So let’s just be a bit comprehensive with them!!

3 days, still no sync. Guess I’m going back to v1.
If all these problems are caused by the server’s being overloaded, why is v1 syncing without a problem? If they’re using different servers, why?

Greetings from Czech Republic ;-)

I would like to thank you for Foxmarks extension = its previous version IS really great, very helpful & one of my most favorite .XPI (together with AddBlock+, NoScript, WebDeveloperToolbar & DownEmAll).

Unfortunately, both updates to v. 2.0.xx were a little bit spooky, so after severe problems (same as described above) I have downgraded back to previous functional version, after manual BackUP of my bookmarks.

So now, I am using v. 1.0.1 for my default account and waiting for final confirmation of functionality.

Thanks & Good luck

Jan

BTW: In such situation it could be possibly better to test the new Builds comprehensively in smaller groups of selected users, before their final release to avoid such digrace ;-)

Appreciate the updates above…but someone PLEASE address exactly why the sync problems only occur with 2.0.34 and not with 1.01!

The servers haven’t changed…the program has. So, how are we supposed to support new software that doesn’t play nice with the servers of the company that WROTE IT?!

The “clouds” still haven’t cleared here yet…still 0 for 3 on syncs.

First I would like to apologize for my crappy comments above. I had a really bad day yesterday. I’m sorry.

Secondly, I am now able to sync with all my computers (4) with the newest version (2.0.34). It works fine.

Thank you for your hard work.

Again, I’m sorry for being a butt.

Why is it I can’t even connect to my account on http://my.foxmarks.com/ since yesterday??

All I get is a message that says “BookMarks Unavailable: The My.Foxmarks bookmarks server is currently overwhelmed. We will not be able to provide you with your bookmarks at this time.

We apologize for this inconvenience.”

This is since yesterday afternoon. I really am starting to give up on Foxmarks and ready to start looking for an alternative. Thank God for backups so I don’t lose all the bookmarks I have carefully hoarded over time.

Anybody that complains about a free software/service having a few problems during an upgrade/transition phase is an idiot and has no concept of the kind of work that goes into something like Foxmarks.

Foxmarks makes my browsing significantly more organized, thank you!

I’m still having issues syncing one of my computers. I have my work and home computer, I’ve upgraded both to the new version of foxmarks. My home computer has no problem uploading any changes to my bookmarks; however my work computer doesn’t seems to be able to upload or download any changes.

I’ve tried uninstalling foxmarks on my work computer and tried reinstalling, but it still doesn’t seem to want to sync…

:(

I want to second what many people have said ‘above’ especially Tom.

I am one of the unfortunate who has been unable to get the sync to go through on any of my computers. But I am 100% behind you guys and I know that eventually it will work and all will be right in the world.

Over the past year or so your Firefox add-on has made my internet experience MUCH more pleasurable and efficient, so a little hiccup in an otherwise WONDERFUL service is really no big deal.

We are the faithful, and we are patient, and we thank you.

I had the new Foxmarks for a few days and it never worked. I have removed till you get your act together.

Please tell me it is possible to go back to foxmarks 1.0.1. It simply worked.

Foxmarks 2 = Vista

Foxmarks 1.0.1 = XP

I just want it to work, please.

Hello Foxmarks-Team

I just tried your plugin the first time this week and I came into the update phase – it took a while but now: IT WORKS PERFEKT !!!!!!

All you people complaining: Just wait and be patient!!!! Stop insulting people who offer software for free and AS IT IS … you can`t be so important that you can not wait a fews days to syncronise !! Or are you guys bookmark dealers??

Thanks to all the people behind this project

Cheers GoodJob

Yes, I have been frustrated waiting for the server, but I can still get to my bookmarks, I paid nothing for this, and it has worked well for most of the time I’ve used it.

Thanks for the upgrade, good luck getting the trouble sorted out, and thanks for a great product.

Mike

Sorry for the lack of direct responses; we’re juggling a lot of chainsaws here. One question that keeps coming up that I have a quick answer for is: Why is 1.0.1 working so well when 2.0.34 is taking some time? The synchronization of the two extension versions hits different servers and stores the data in different places. During our original launch version 1.0.1 *was* affected, but we re-architectured the servers to allow 1.0.1 to continue working more-or-less smoothly for our second launch (though I’ve seen lots of connection resets for 1.0.1 as well).

We’ll have another update later today with answers to many more of your variegated questions, but right now I need to go catch a chainsaw.

All the people with the negative comments towards the developers, do us all a favor and stop spewing your misery on this thread. I for one am EXTREMELY THANKFUL to the developers for making this great FREE extension. I don’t particularly like doing work for free, especially if people don’t appreciate it.

I hope the ignorant angry remarks don’t sway the developers away from donating their time to make something this useful. Seriously people, why bite the hand that feeds you.

Do you see how angry you’re getting over bookmarks? Basically your attitudes make you look like the village idiots, I mean, you’re angry over bookmarks not syncing. Whoa, get a life bud.

Mine didn’t work yesterday, but it wasn’t the end of my world… IT WAS ONLY BOOKMARKS, and today it works perfect.

A big thanks to the developers!

Thank you, Quix, your advice above helped me sync with my own FTP server.

Thanks also to Wolffire for confirming the URL change.

The reason I went with Foxmarks is that it allows me to use my own server. Thanks, Foxmarks team, for allowing this. It’s your program, there’s no one forcing you to make your free program work on servers other than your own, and it’s greatly appreciated.

That said, it took a (very small amount of) trial and error to figure out the URL in version 1. Version 2 was even more obscure, and the program simply didn’t handle the data file format changeover well.

As for the Foxmarks server delays, first, it’s completely understandable. Second, the busy servers seem to be a different problem from the “eternal ‘Verifying Account’” and repeated “Foxmarks is busy” errors that I and others have experienced.

Foxmarks, you should be proud that your program has gathered a generous and patient community that is willing to help each other work around program glitches. I’m glad to see that so many users have apparently had no trouble.

Like many others I am getting tired of upgrading only to find that the so-called upgrade doesn’t work. This is the second time in a row that there have been problems with an “upgrade. I’m going back to 1.0 and find a bookmark synchronizer that doesn’t stop working with every “upgrade”.

Although I was having the same problems as others for the past few days since upgrading to V2.0.34, my Foxmarks just synchronized quickly without delay (9:50 a.m. Pacific time).

Although upgrade headaches are bound to happen from time to time, it seems that we’re finally over the hump.

Thanks again for Foxmarks – quite a handy utility!

Foxmarks 2 hangs for a long time when it is verifying my account, then sometimes it makes it through. I have been sitting for a few minutes saying “Downloading sync file…” What gives?

I’m having a similar issue. Foxmarks sits there, “verifying account,” and then it sits there, “downloading sync file,” but never ends up doing anything. I actually left my computer, came back in an hour, and then it said that there was an error.

Glad to know I’m not the only one having these issues! All said and done, thanks Foxmarks team for working on this – but I am definitely recognizing how addicted I am to this product now that I haven’t been able to use it for a week!!!

Geeze. Are any of these whiners paying for foxmarks? I think it rocks and it’s worth a little hassle for improvements. What fool does not backup his bookmarks anyway?

I waited until today to update because I figured I would help out by not upgrading for a few days. I have upgraded and have yet to successfully sync. The biggest error I get is “The server is currently unavailable. Please try again later.” The other error is “Unknown 504 error.” This is on 2 different machines trying to sync with your servers. If the errors continue I may have no choice but to store the bookmarks on my own server, but that seems to defeat the purpose of this wonderful extension which I thought was to provide a simple easy way to sync your bookmarks and have them accessible on the web. Anyway thanks for the work on this and I will not give up because I know eventually it will work.

UPDATE: Actually, I’m wrong, we know what’s going on here and are working on fixing it. Thanks for your patience!

For those of you who are experiencing hanging while verifying account, that’s not something we’ve seen. If you can include/email us the last few lines of your foxmarks.log file when that’s happening, it’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just restarted Firefox (after uninstalling the addon). Reinstalled, restarted Firefox again, immediately went and did a Download of my bookmarks and looks like all is well. Thank you for the awesome product (just to clarify, I wasn’t complaining, just passing along my problems and then my solution).

Hi, all account has been migrated ?
I don’t use foxmarks during 1 week, and now when I visited the site I have no bookmarks. It’s a bug or I must wait ?

Foxmarks is working for me now. Worth this couple of days waiting for the transition to the new version! Thanks for the best Firefox add-on! I have been using it for about a year on my three PCs, and couldn’t live without it ;-). I think the inevitably slightly rough transition was a small price for this major upgrade in functionality. Once more many many thanks for keeping Foxmarks free!

Pedro.

Just to let you know (and you might know already, if it’s not just me!) that, after weeks of seamless working with v2, I’ve been getting internal server errors. It says downloading sync file, performing sync, writing sync file – then comes the error. My last sync was about midday GMT.
Good luck in tracking it down and thanks for the product.

Just a note to thank you guys for your great work. Foxmarks is definitely the most important of my (numerous) Firefox extensions. I constantly work between my home desktop, work laptop and other computers using Firefox for U3 and Foxmarks is just a godsend!

I know there are others similar offerings out there, but for me, Foxmarks is by far the best!

Keep it up!

Giorgio

Well, right after I did the reinstall and it synched, it has started to synch again and is still trying.

It is simply not working….

Great! It worked flawlessly for me – I’ll test my other boxes when I get home this evening.

Didn’t lose anything, no problems in that regard, I was just getting connection reset.

Thanks for your work, and I know it was more work dealing with the upset people than it was to write the thing.

Strange how people feel they can complain and get angry when a free service doesn’t work exactly like they think it should.

:)

And your extension is nothing like Vista. It’s more like Knoppix – something everyone should have in their toolbox!

So, what’s new/changed in 2.0.35?

eric: “but right now I need to go catch a chainsaw.”

For jeebus’ sake, be sure to only grab the noisy end.

Seems like the 20th is going to pass with the same problems – what a shame that such an excellent product has been failed by the temptation to try to improve – when it does actually work what will be better in the new version.?

3hrs to sync and I still have not been successful. After the upgrade, foxmarks only works on one of my computers (the PC). Being that I got this great program for free, I can’t complain too much…just be patient for elves at foxmarks to catch up with the glitches.

I am thankful to know that others are having such a frustrating experience with this amazing product. We all appreciate that it is free but the on-going problems with synching and new versions is tremendously frustrating…maybe think through the process a bit more before launching another version. Or add servers….I am just very frustrated right now…

Can someone tell me how to backup my bookmarks? They have been totally wiped off of one of my computers, but still on one that hasn’t been able to sync yet.
I need my laptop to travel tomorrow and that is the one missing all teh bookmarks.

How come I can’t find any settings in the tools section for which takes priority when merging. I am afraid the ones on my PC will get wiped too.

Works great after some starting problems.

I cannot get my personal toolbar to load on Firefox with Foxmarks. I can see it under “My Account” and it is under the Bookmark tab – - but it should be loaded on the screen.

Please advise, thanks!

Matt Garrett

syncs just started failing for me this evening. Otherwise it’s been a cool little helper

I’m trying to sync and it tells me there is an Internal Server Error

The old one still works can’t get the new one to

Wish I checked here before I upgraded. I too had to revert to the older version (using a Mac, OS 10.4.11). Thought it worked at first, then it started to hang Firefox. Would post the log but it’s gone now. The old version worked quite well: simple is good.
Goes to show: it doesn’t pay to be an early adopter.
Please let us know when this is stable, but thanks for a fantastic product that was my primary reason to abandon Safari!

Well…I finally got a sync on my Mac! One down, two to go…

Incidentally, the way I got it to sync, coincidence or not, was to open Firefox and immediately click the “Synchronize Now” before it got a chance to automatically start. I figured I’d take a shot against it going into eternal (non) sync-ville.

Y’all might want to give that a shot…

@Lora:

I’m not sure how others do it, but I use FEBE to backup both bookmarks and extensions, and CLEO to “zip” them all into a archive file (CLEO is optional but is good for mass backup/restore from one machine to another). Here’s a link:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=febe&status=4

I’ve accidentally blown away my bookmarks and had to restore them so I can say it works. I’ve also used this to revert to older versions of extensions once or twice.

Good luck!

Just upgraded, thought I’d wait a couple of days ;) and no problems.

I can`t beleive some of the comments that have been written!

Thanks for all your hard work, and for a great product!!!

Danny

Worth the wait for an invaluable product, thanks for the hard work guys!

Lora: “Can someone tell me how to backup my bookmarks? ”

Google for backing up Firefox bookmarks – they’re stored in a file called bookmarks.html in your Firefox profile directory tree. Firefox actually keeps backups itself.

Glad to say the sync problems I had yesterday are not there this morning (UK time).

Thanks guys…

I cannot believe the arrogance of some of the posters here. These guys are obviously under the pump, doing the best they can to provide this service. I know what it’s like to be under that sort of pressure, and idiots spouting abuse is not helpfull.

If you lost bookmarks, you are an idiot, and you deserve it. Ever heard of a backup?

If you have nothing constructive or nice to say to these guys, shut the hell up!

To the Foxmarks dev team, keep it up guys. I’m sure you’ll make it through and all be sitting arround with holiday drinks laughing about this before you know it.

Chears:)

filbert

Go to Bookmarks – organise bookmarks and then go to file – export.

Choose somwhere to save it and your done.

It saves as an html page that you can just open in firefox if you need to.

:)

Wow, now I like like a git that doesn’t read the whole post.

:(

Well,

I’m since 4 days without synchronizing my bookmarks between Office and home. At the first time I was very angry on Foxmarks.com – but…

In Germany we have a saying:

Free translatet:
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
(Einem gescheckten Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul.)

Well – Foxmarks is a FREE Service – and it’s a great Service. And it will be great again when it will work again.
So, there is no reason to be angry on foxmarks….

Not having it for a while shows how precious it is..

Successful on the Mac, as I reported above…not so much this morning on my work PC.

Tried to do the same trick that worked on my Mac last night (Manually hitting “Synchronize Now” before the automatic sync could kick in), but I am stuck at “Downloading sync file” for 23 minutes and counting.

Looks like it’s gonna be another slow Firefox day… :-(

Hát én volnék, a Mozilláról. Jessica-Mani

I use my own server and initially had absolutely no luck trying to get the latest release, 2.0.34. I saw a variety of errors whenever I tried to sync, including: foxmarks is busy, login failure, etc. Eventually, I happened upon another user howto for an older version of foxmarks that said you **must** have the path end in your username. I decided what the heck and everything suddenly started working!

I had been using a path like /foxmarks.xml and when I switched it to //foxmarks.xson everything has been syncing happily along.

I have no clue why it would care one bit about the path name, but it sure seemed to make a difference.

First, want to say I think Foxmarks is great.

But I had to change back to version 1.0.1

I will wait till version 2.* is stable and the heavy load is over.

I use three PC total (1 work, 2 home) and as of Thursday morning 12/21/2007 was unable to get any of them to sync using version 2.*, so that is why I changed back to version 1.0.1 and everything works fine.

Server Unavailable yet again…WTF?

What is going on with Foxmarks Server is down?!?!

Mark, where is that Path setting? I don’t see it in any of the settings.

I also have three locations using Foxmarks (work, home, and USB drive), and consider this extension & service to be an absolute essential. Thank you so much for it, and for all your hard work!

I did once loose bookmarks because the auto-sync feature synchronized a corrupted file. I did not have an explicit backup at the time, but my triple-location usage saved me, and you can bet I have backups now (using the FEBE extension mentioned above). I also turned off auto-sync/sync-on-shutdown.

This time around, the auto-update crashed all of my extensions, and I had to restore Firefox completely. I’ll hold on to Foxmarks 1.0.1 until things stabilize – but I’m looking forward to the upgrade, and I’ll be watching the blog!

One thing I would like to do that I have not figured out yet, is how to sync the bookmarks, but leave the bookmarks toolbar folder different on each browser. That way, the toolbar at home and at work could be different, and would not change at home when I sync from there after doing so at work. (’Cause, ya know, my kids really don’t need a visible bookmark to the university accounting forms page. . . ) Is that an option? If not, can you make it one? (After some well-deserved holiday cheer, of course!)

Foxmarks is the most important extension that I have for Mozilla Firefox. I rely heavily on it. I am thankful that it exists and until last week, worked very well for me.

Version 2.0.34 did not work for me at all. It was automatically installed on my three computers, and since that time there was no synchronization. I was able to access http://my.foxmarks.com/ without any problems (except when your servers were very busy, then I needed a few retries).

I waited a week for your server issues to calm down.
I attempted to force a bookmark upload to your server.
I updated my password.
I couldn’t figure out why the new version didn’t work for me.

I downgraded to 1.0.1
Everything works wonderfully now. Just like in the past.

Since you asked in your blog for a copy of the log file of those who can’t use the new version, I have included it below.

Good luck with fixing the upgrade issue. I’ll check your blog occasionally to know when its safe to upgrade again.

You make a good product that I enjoy and rely on.

Thank you.

v2.0.34 doesn’t work with FF2.0.0.11 Will revert back to older version.

As of 6pm EST, I am able to sync! Yayy!

It’s tough when you depend on something and it’s not there for a while. I have been quite frustrated too, but as others have said, it’s free. And I’m sure these folks have been working hard to make things right.

Hope everyone else will be able to sync soon! :)

Thanks very much for this add-on. Very useful and didn’t know I needed it until I started using it!

Tom

Just started using Foxmarks a few days ago and your situation reminded me of something.

Once upon a time i met a wonderful woman. After we got to know each other she told me that she had had some difficult situations in the past and wondered how i felt about it.

i told her i didn’t care where she had been. What counted was where she was going. Five years later, i’ve never been so happy. Wish the same for you folks. Happy holidays.

Regards,

jc

After 4 days of no luck (hangs during verification & syncing), it just started working! Good work, guys! Thanks!

Installed 2.0.34 on three computers. None work. Is the program bugged or is it only a service issue?

Seems like it’s taking a long time to sync with the new version and my 3rd computer (out of 3) has never been able to perform a sync at all. It always hangs forever on “writing to sync file” and never finishes.

Hello,

but not ok on two linux with firefox 2.0.0.10 there is no newer version for me.
the error i recieve is as seen bellow.

thanks in advance for responce

[...] But then came the upgrade. Foxmarks at first couldn’t connect to the synchronization servers but then it slowly started up again, like an arthritic old man running a marathon. Then whenever I tried to shut down Firefox, I would be asked by Foxmarks if I wanted to synchronize before closing (even though I repeatedly said “yes” and told it to remember my answer). Plus it was never fast and instead of the silent background running, it was always in my face, going slow and breaking down. [...]

After update, when foxmarks tries to sync, this error occurs: “Connection reset”.

@finance: I suspect you might have a problem with your internet connection, or have installed an older version of the Foxmarks extension. Please email us with more information and we’ll do our best to help.

Hurray, I solved the 400 error…

Export current bookmarks for backup purposes.

Tools > Add-ons
– Foxmarks Bookmark Syncronizer
– Preferences
– Advanced Tab
– Download (overwrite all local bookmarks)
– Upload (Not necessary but this is where the error happens)

Hurray, apparently this can happen when your local copy becomes corrupted.
