Xmarks for Chrome!

We’ve been swamped with requests to create a version of Xmarks for the Google Chrome browser. We’re hard at work on that and, thanks to some new APIs from Google, are pleased to report that we have Xmarks synchronization working in the Windows developer channel for Chrome. The Chrome extension platform is still far from complete and our initial alpha release has many rough edges, but for you brave (and very vocal) early adopters, we wanted to get this into your hands sooner rather than later.

We’re happy to invite you to test our early alpha release of Xmarks for Chrome. The extension will synchronize your Chrome bookmarks across computers running Firefox, IE, Safari and/or Chrome. Just like our other versions, Xmarks for Chrome works quietly in the background to keep all your bookmarks the same on all of your browsers.

If you’re interested in participating in the alpha test please sign up.  This is a closed alpha, which means that you won’t be able to install the extension immediately. After signing up we’ll email you when you’ve been accepted into the program – we do this for scaling and stability reasons.

Excellent news! I usually browse with FF but lately I found a lot lighter (and sometimes more clever) to use Chrome and Xmarks is such a good plug in.

Excellent! Chrome is almost there for me:
#1 requirement: master password to protect save pws
#2 requirement: bookmark sync (check)
#3 requirement: mouse gestures

Have they added google toolbar to the application yet?
This would ultimately take care of the bookmark issues.

@Philip Golan: I don’t think they’re planning on making a google toolbar for Chrome; specifically, they will add bookmark sync(and a few other things eventually), but it will be built into the browser.

I imagine they will merge the two syncing services (the one for chrome and the google toolbar one) eventually, but right now they’re still separate (which makes sense, seeing as the sync feature is still only in the dev version and, as such, is still being tested).

Excellent! Firefox is really becoming such a bloated hassle. Plus there is a particular annoyance that just hasn’t been fixed yet. So basically the only thing holding me back from moving my stuff over to Chrome is XMARKS implementation.

@justme: This isn’t an official response, but…

Since srware’s Iron is based on Chromium (not Chrome), extensions which work on Chromium should work on Iron (though maybe not immediately). Since Chromium is the open source bits of Chrome, any extensions written for Chrome should work for Chromium. By extension (no pun intended), any extensions written for Chrome should work for Iron.

That is to say: yes, (when it’s done) it should work on Chrome, Chromium, and Iron (that is, if they didn’t change any of the extension bits in Iron; you’d have to ask them about that). That doesn’t say anything about official support, though.

Great stuff. I probably have too many plug-ins in my Firefox browser, it’s getting a bit slower nowadays, so I can switch over to Chrome to use this.

Can’t wait to get access to the alpha… I’m still pending. I’ve been missing my xmarks. Chrome dev 4 has bookmark sync but, it’s not the same. Plus, google bypassed their own bookmarks service with the sync version by having it sync to google docs. It’s more than a bit lame.

@Brandon: Definitely! Google Chrome for the Mac doesn’t really support extensions yet. As soon as it does Xmarks for Chrome will work on the Mac too.
